Priced a 2010 Honda Goldwing 1800

my next door neighbor has a goldwing, another friend has one....
the Capt I'm working with right now has a goldwing with 100k miles on it.
He recently hit a deer at 50mph around a corner and walked away from it. He actually drove the bike the 400miles home.

All three of these people (especially the last one) are fanatics.
These are really excellent pieces of machinery.

Just the same, buy used.... the type of person that owns a Goldwing is not the type that doesn't maintain or treats the bike like crap, etc etc.
Also, I don't know if this helps.... but the guy that hit the deer, the Insurance company sent him over $8k to repair the bike, and the damage was all cosmetic, so the value is noted by more than just the Dealerships :-)

Well Thanks for the offer Lamin8r; My uncle has offered too.
I actually got a great deal on it when I bought it.
Some guy specail ordered it for car museum in 2006 and it's a 2007.
Anyway he had it in there and found out that they Had the Mustang Salean's
down here in Brandon Florida and trailered it down here with less then 300 miles on it.
He had all the goodies installed at the tune of about $36,000 I got it for less then $24,000. I found some old style looking rear window luvers had them paint and put them on. Those really make it stand out to me. I have had atleast 50 people trying to buy it from me. It is grabber Orange with two wide racing stripes. It's only got the 283 in it but that is all it needs, Beleive you me it's plenty fast for the wife and she loves it.

Honda Goldwings are made (assembled anyway) in Ohio, by Americans.

Harleys are assembled from parts sourced all over the world for this US market. They also have Harley factory's building their export bikes offshore for export markets, which take away US jobs.

Being an "out of work guy" myself, I can appreciate the Buy American position, but Motorcycles don't make for a good comparision example. It's not a simple as just saying Buy American.

I know where he is comming from and I agree for the most part.
All of my Cars and Trucks are American made.
When I was a Kid I drove a 73 VW bug but it was very undependable,
so I got rid of it and started driving Dodges.
Harley's are very Undependable for long cruz's to me,
So I want the Cadillac of bikes, if I even end up getting it.
The wife and I can't be broke down on the side of the road
some place that ain't safe for her or me.

Sorry John - Gold Wings are now made in Japan.

Honda closed their Gold Wing plant in Marysville, Ohio July 30th, 2009. All Gold Wings – along with just about every other two-wheeler from Honda – are currently imported from Japan. The plant was huge - 330,000 square-feet and assembled the Gold Wing since 1981. It was the first Honda manufacturing facility in America and a million Honda Gold Wing motorcycles were made on that assembly line. Honda employed a lot of Americans, but alas – Honda could not justify the wages and benefits associated with assembly of the bikes in this country so moved back to Japan. Its business, i.e., loyalty is to their parent company.

Harley builds Softail and Touring models in York PA. Sportsters, Dynas and V-Rods models are built in Kansas City Missouri. Harley’s corporate offices are in Milwaukee as are two engine plants. Harley manufactures accessories such as sidecars and custom items in a factory in Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

Some of Harley’s minor components are made overseas (mostly electronics). Everything else is made and assembled in the United States.
According to Harley’s media folks,

“Harley-Davidson has announced the build of a second assembly plant ever outside the United States in India. The "complete knock down" plant or CKD is expected to be up and running in the northern Indian state of Haryana in first half of 2011. Parts made in America will be put together for the Indian market in Haryana. India is the second fastest growing two-wheeler market in the world behind China. More than 10 million two-wheelers were sold in India in the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Beyond the obvious market potential there is another major reason Harley-Davidson is building an assembly plant in India -- to bring down India's import duties which right now are so high Indian consumers pay double for fully assembled imported vehicles. Exporting just the parts to India lowers the import duty tariffs by around 80 percent.”

Interestingly enough – I always “hear about” how Harley’s are “always in the shop” – never had the problem with mine and I ride with a lot of guys that must be lucky too because their bikes always seem to run just fine – some put on 25K miles a year – must just take good care of them in terms of oil changes and keeping things maintained.. Interestingly enough, last big ride I took where there was a broken bike happened to be a BMW that just quit.

Love what you ride – it’s really true what is said regarding Harley’s, “if I have to explain, you wouldn’t understand.” I know guys with just about every kind of bike there is, but I’m a Harley guy because nothing has every come close to the sound, feel and all encompassing experience that Harley is for me. And I've never met a finer bunch of men and women - they'll just do anything for another rider. Just sayin…

As far as Goldwings go,we have friends a few miles from us who own a goldwing,and his wife has a goldwing trike..This is her second trike,,they also went to America earlier this year for a Goldwing owners rally and rode across to the East Coast as well..:cool:
Just read your post Glenn,I dont have a bike,but have always had friends,and family[Lyndas brother]who have Harleys,just love the sound,and,like you,dont know too many people who have had problems with them,,although when Lyndas bro bought the one he has now,he just found out why it was cheap..The last owner was very hard on it,,didnt service it..

Thanks lamin8r; Harley's deffinatly have a big following down her in Florida.
And I have plenty of good friends that ride them, and I have even stopped from time to time to help a few out. I mean we have the big Daytona thing down here every year.
I have been driving Florida roads for close to 30 years in a big truck and I have seen alot of stuff broke down and I have never not once seen a broke down Goldwing on the side of the road. And I have seen hundreds of them on the highways around Florida.
I don't want to step on toe's but I am just saying what I have seen first hand over the years here. Kurt

Harleys are cool bikes, but they do not make a bike comparable to the goldwing.. Harleys are not smooth running, that's much of what makes them cool, but it's also a big reason on why I would say there no comparison to a goldwing..

think about it this way. dealers are not given bikes/ vehicles to sell. they have to maintain there inventory at there own cost.. the bike you buy will support that dealership. they are the 1's supporting japan

Glenn, Thank you for the update on the Ohio plant. It's another sad statement of whats occuring in the motorcycle industry. Touring (as in Goldwings) bikes are a relatively small segment of the entire motorcycle market. The Cruiser segment models were a huge part of the production of the Ohio Honda plant. The M/C production closure ( I believe the plant was converted to more car production?) will most likely prove to be a good business choice on Honda's part. They are forcasting 2012 to to continue to be a down year in M/C sales. They feel that small displacement (as in cheap to buy) transportation models, will see the first sales returns in the indusrty recovery. They predict Cruisers to be last to recover since they are mostly purchased as toys, not for serious transportation.

We both completely agree that you should ride what makes you feel good. Every major company makes a good motorcycle today. Arguing about brands is like saying Blonds "are better", than Redheads. Many say that Harley Davidson is a religion and not just a motorcycle, and I agree. You will never get me to argue with someone's religion.

Besides.......The Sport bike riders need to have the slow moving objects in the roadway to make their rides fun. They look at the Harley's as Pylon's in the roadway.

A basic Harley Bagger will start around 17,500.00. They are quite reliable these days and a very nice ride, handle like a dream. Even a upscale one will be less than 30k!

Yup - I've had a few of the sport bikes blow past me while I'm cruzin at 50-60. Make me feel like I'm standing still. Tough to out run the Motorola in the State Troopers car though:LOL::LOL:
