Hey Barb,
I had forgotten that the guy that got it mounted also lit it off with some gas down the carb. Tech's got the right approach - no reason for the spark to be gone if all you did was haul it home. You've proven fuel pressure to the carb, so you might want to look into the venturi and open the throttle once to see if you get a good strong double shot of gas from the accelerator pump. If not then you have to assume that your needle & seat is not opening - again Tech's sharp rap with a hammer handle may be the fix.
Regarding burning your hair off with a shot of starting fluid (ether), no one with half a brain is going to spray ether while cranking, much less while cranking and leaning over the carb. Anyone who does probably deserves the singed eyebrowsRoger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

thought about that too ted. the mechanic filled it up with fresh gas. have not gotten to it today as it is 105 with the heat index here. and on a all black car it is just too hot to do anything until the sun starts to set.BARB

If its like the ones I've installed thats right. Is the choke open when your cranking... If its that hot there I wouldn't think it would be closed. Maybe for a second but not long.Charlie

i do not know charlie. i think that it is as i can smell gas. but i am doing this alone and really can not see what the carb is doing when i turn it over. i do know that when i crank it a little white smoke is coming out of the header if that is a sign of something. lord i am so lost trying to do this. it is so frustrating.BARB

To check the electric choke you can run just turn on the ignition switch and see if it opens. it works on temp. not rpm. and like I said I don't think it would be closed with this heat. If it is you should be able to open it and put a screwdriver in to hold it open.... You may have it flooded....If that is the case Hold the throttle all the way open and put a screwdriver in the carb all the way down and let it sit for awhile to dry up the extra gas. Its frustrating here too trying to figure out the problem when I'm sure its somthing simpleLast edited by cffisher; 06-01-2011 at 05:45 PM.

Barb, maybe I missed something, but wasn't that mechanic supposed to get it running and usable for you? What did he do, hand it back half finished for you to wrap up?
I agree with Steve, I would get him involved again.

took the choke wire loose. took a screwdriver and whacked the side of the carb. just had enough juice in my battery to turn her over one time. she fired up. woo hoo. scared me so much that i instantly turned her off. now have to wait for hubby to come home this afternoon to jump my battery to try again. BUT SHE DID FIRE. i am so, so gratfull to you all for the help. will make a video of it running this afternoon. WOO HOO.BARB

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
