Austin and San Antonio are really nice cities. Very friendly and lots of Car People. Austin has managed to stay pretty prosperous in spite of the crap in D.C..

You're right the economy has held up pretty well. Housing is a bit high in the Metroplex ,but if you get out side of Austin like Shine mentioned it's more affordable.
