Glad you caught them and it all came out to the good - relatively speaking.

We move out in the country to get away from this crap, get some space around us, and the idiots try to fill in the empty spaces. When I could, out in the mountains with the acreage, I always went openly and obviously armed when I was working or wandering around the area. We also keep noisy, nervous dogs around, always have, even in the city. An alarm on your shop will give you an extra layer of security, though.

Out in the boonies, police response is often fairly long in coming, and the creeps know this, so they figure that most folks will call the cops and wait, and they count on it. If they think you might be inclined to nail them yourself, they will likely avoid you. We never had any problems, but a couple of our neighbors did, folks who relocated from San Francisco, and were not inclined to be entirely self sufficient - they did not last more than a couple of years there.

Interesting update. The Sheriff's Office gave me a courtesy call this morning letting me know that both of these "Boys" had been released on there own recognizance. Call came at 10:20 this morning, I mean they didn't spend even 24 hours in jail. The Sheriff also asked me "IF" I intended to press charges? I said not yes but Hell Yes. I went down to the city Hall and filled out the papers. Both of these "Boys" ( that term was used a least a dozen times by folks at City Hall) turned out to be two full grown "BOYS" one being 28 and the other 31. There arrest record ---shown to me by a deputy--- had for one of them 9 burglaries and 14 for the other. Neither of them has done more than Three months in the county jail for any one offense.

Last night when I confronted these two &*^$%, I stopped them by firing a couple of rounds into the ground just as they were exiting the shop door. Without the Gun I am sure they would not have stopped at all.

Now with that said I don't know how much good it did to stop them at all, I mean they didn't even do 12 Hours in jail. The one thing I did accomplish , I Guess, is they didn't steal from me this time. I will see these charges to the very end were ever that leads, but I don't really have any high hopes after talking to the Sheriff today. I also have no expectation of these two clowns coming back here, if they were to do that again surely they know that the out come could be complettly different. And maybe thats all any of us can hope for, that the bad guys don't choose us again. Damn what a sorry state of affairs that is...

You are lucky to be able to confront them with a gun,,AND put a couple of rounds in the ground to stop them.If it had happened here,and I had so much as deck them with a lump of wood,I would have been charged,possibly,with assault,for protecting my own property,but I still would have done it..The crims have too much protection,,Send them to Sherrif Joes boot camp in Arizona...Two years hard labor in a rock pit might help..

I believe every state & every country should have the right to SHOOT to KILL like you can in Texas & several other states here in the US when it comes to protecting your property & self. It is total BS that a property owner can & has been charged w/ assult/battery to murder because of some low life piece of sh*t stealing from them, breaking into thier homes or even trying to assult the owner. All I can say is if some low life breaks into my house/shop & I'm there, they're going out in a damn body bag, because of self-defense on my own part..

Glad to hear you and your family came out safe. It really sucks when law enforcement would let repeat offenders go after twelve hours. I too keep fire arms for this very reason. Never want to be in a situation where the outcome is a family member dead or raped. Glad you were safe and good thinking on the alarm system, dogs make good companions and early warning systems.

Don't let a bad experience get you down! Follow through with the courts, who knows maybe this will be their last straw with the judge. Definately get an alarm system. Just the kind that sounds a very loud siren will be enough to scare them off. Truth was told about shooting them and you being the one to actually serve jail time. Laws leave a lot to be desired for the victims! Now a mean assed dog on the other hand! If you hadn't taken your gun wiith you it probably would have ended with you being robbed and beaten or worse. one of my closets friends woke up to having his front door kicked in and was beat by two men that turfed him into the trunk of his car and stole it,they pulled him out twice to beat him bad, he thought he was going to die, thankfully he is here today, you did what you needed to do to protect what you have spent countless years buying to enjoy your hobby's, i am glad you and your family are safe, that's whats important, and like my friend alarms are great but the thought of needing one just makes a persons blood boil though. good luck and hope it turns out well,i am still replacing stolen tools from the last robbery that happend to me. grr insurance only covered small [portion of the whole i don't own guns because the better half feels strongly against them so she figures because husband is 200 + lbs he can handle anything we have three beautiful children you would think her mind would change just a bit,after the last robbery can't seem to fight that stubborn streak,but i sure hope that judge don't slap those little pr!cks with a slap on the wrist

I know how you feel i had all of my tools ripped off in 2003, my dad and me were building him a new house and somebody broke in and took everything, the real kicker was it was somebody that had worked there, we think it was one of the bricklayers, at least you know who did it. a lot of my tools were gifts from people who are no longer around that is what really bothered me. I have no respect for a thief,, especially for one who steals a persons tools they earn their living with. the thieves are getting bolder too, I was at a friends house about a year ago. we heard a noise outside and there was a dude going down the driveway pushing daves new gas grill, we caught him and kicked his ass, his answer was"" he was just looking at it"""???

Everyone should check their state laws regarding the use of deadly force. EVERY STATE MAY BE DIFFERENT. For instance, this link shows some Q&As for Florida:

Displaying a weapon or shooting into the ground may be against the law in your state.....depending upon what the bad guys are doing. Shooting someone running away or driving away is almost always against the law....they have ceased the threat upon you.

Read the law, if in doubt ask someone like a CCW instructor. Dont rely upon street corner law...it could bite you big and you might become a cellmate of the guy who stole your stuff.

I may be pro gun and think all bad guys deserve getting shot but the law gives us specific rules within which we must operate

i`m pretty sure you can use deadly force in bama .. as long as you drag them inside your home after you kill them

In Missouri they just enacted something called the castle defense statute, i do not know all the details, but basically it allows the use of deadly force. For my defense i have photos and videotape of all most all of my tools as well as receipts and a list i add to as new ones are aqquired, i keep this in the safety deposit box and the insurance guy has a copy. i know this costs more but i have been ripped off pretty bad before, it would really help to be prepared

I think a gun is waaaaay too quick and painless for a theif!!!! A few rounds with one of them police batons or a well balanced Louisville slugger is a punishment that more closely fits the crime of stealing my tools!!!!! No need to kill the guy, just leave him laying there wishing he was dead!!!!! If he wants to sue me after the beating, guarantee he'll never make it to court to testify....
