Pat you and your wife were lucky. I was beginning to see a new computer in your future.

I've been messing with these things for nearly 30 years (45 if you included the mainframes ) and they never fail to amaze me or frustrate me. I think they have actually extended my life, because I absolutely refuse to let them win.

Now that we are confused I'll hijack this thread a bit - what kind of trouble am I going to run into if I change out the mother board and CPU** of my current home built desk top? I've seen 57 varieties of potential problems, but nothing that is consistant for my XP OS. I have continued to have lock up problems that I'm tracing back to the USB connection area. Some days, no problems, today, 4 times. I've tried to download updated drivers from MSI, the mobo manufacturer, but to no avail. I'll make a couple more attempts but after Christmas/New Years week so if I 'disappear' for a while........

    ** different manufacturers Intel/Asus possibly

How old is your computer? It might be less expensive to replace the computer.

The computer is a middle of the road CPU and mobo and home built, with a high end case, power supply and hard drive and is just a year old. The replacement micro ATX mobo and CPU at Newegg is in the $100 to $150 range plus a few hours of my time. I'm most concerned with what it will do to the XP/docs files, but of course can (will) save most files on a Cd, DVD or my exterior hard drive which is really a bit small.

Don't say that, It's only about 2 yrs old, the CD went out 6 months after we got it. I still have to fix my other Dell (new hard drive, need to pull info from old one first), this one I'm using right now is a real slow one that my mother-inlaw gave me.
