Jon, you're WAAAYYYY to logical! My brother and SIL, who are so left wing they make Sen. Obama look like Rush Limbaugh by comparison, bought one. After attempting to make the same point you have I came to the realization it was more about them showing "how much they care" than about how actually practical their choice was. A triumph of symbolism over substance. But I still love 'em.

Looking back I think it can safely be said the "cash for klunkers" scheme was another prime example of Washington waste. It didn't stimulate, it would have been cheaper to have done nothing. The blue sky dream of jump starting the economy while moving to fuel efficient transport was baloney.
