Went to the specialist today and I have an LT5 herniated disc. It's pressing on my nerve. They are going to try cortisone shots first. If that doesn't work surgery. Sounds like fun!

Hopefully the shots take care of it but I wouldn't count on it. My Dad is still battling this. Good luck with it Jim!
Yeah my weight has a lot to do with it. I have my fingers crossed but in the back of my head I think surgery is in my future.
Just a thought. Have been seeing an add on local TV for months now (Boise) about a doctor who treats herniated discs with a non invasive Laser Treatment. Don't know anything about it but maybe you could Google it.:)
Jack.
Jack, I'm working with a specialist now and he seems to be the go to guy for this sort of thing in my neck of the woods. I can't believe this, and I'm knocking on every piece of wood I see, but the past couple of days the pain has really become, well...almost livable. I still have the numb leg though so there is still an issue. I'm scheduled for the injection next Monday so we will have to see what that does. I will keep the laser thing in mind though and ask him about it.
Is that your 3 window on ebay?
Yup. Threw it up for laughs in hopes that someone with deep pockets likes it more than the wife does. She would be happy driving any hot rod. She wishes it wasn't chopped. Me personally, I don't want to sell it but if I make a few bucks and or upgrade...so be it. I had one offer so far but it was an insulting low ball offer. You couldn't buy a roller for his offer.
A little back update: I was very nervous and didn't know what to expect but as it turned out the anticipation was worse then the actual procedure. Just a little pinch and some pressure. The hardest part was lying on my stomach. I have obstructive sleep apnea and was finding it very difficult to breath. They were fantastic and did everything they could to make me comfortable. I was sweating bullets when the Dr told his assistant that he didn't think the 3-1/2" needle would be long enough and he should go get the 5-1/2" needle...WHAT????
Jim, I'm glad to hear it went well. Make sre your wife doesn't hear about the longer needle. She may get one after you sell her ride.
The Doctor knew I was nervous about the procedure so I think he was just having some fun at my expense. His assistant never did come back till after we were all done.
Back update: I'm now 13 weeks out of work and I am happy to say I have all the feeling back in my legs and the back pain is gone...well for the most part. I still have some lower back pain across the whole lower back. I have had that for years now but the sciatic nerve pain and the numbness in my legs is all gone. Looks like that shot worked. While I was well on my way to feeling better in the back department, I figured it was a good time to have another needed small surgical procedure last week and that went well. The Doctor has released me for work detail starting Monday. I can't wait to get back to work and start playing catch up with the bills. Thanks for all the well wishes. Now maybe I can get back to car fun.
Glad your procedures went well, Jim, and hoping that your transition back to work is a smooth one.
From me too Jim. Glad your on the mend and feeling better!
Jim, I'm really glad it all went well and you are doing better! Did you end up selling the wife's ride?
Nah! I put a real high number on it figuring everyone was going to low ball the hell out of it and they did just that. One guy offering $16K for it. I told him he was wasting both our times. Then he bumped it up an extra $200 so I just blocked him. Hell a roller with nothing is $16,800! I'd take $30K for it. You could never build it for that, that's for sure. After driving it for a little while she has decided she wants something with a back seat. Personally I think she is nuts! I absolutely love that car and wish I fit in it because it wouldn't go anywhere if it was mine. Just watching it go down the road and the way other people snap their necks as it drives by...(sigh) I mean, doesn't everyone want a 32 ford 3 window? It has the stance, the look, the sound, and even the smells of a hot rod (exhaust & new interior smells). It kinda drives me nuts that she wants to sell it especially after all the work we did to it but you know what they say...Happy wife=Happy life.
What happened to the 34 you were building?
Still have it. Hopefully will be working on it this winter. Unless we get pounded this winter. I have heat in the garage but on very cold windy days it's almost impossible to keep it warm enough to work. It's not like that all the time but if it dips down to single digits and gets very windy the heat has trouble keeping up.
As most of you know I've been out of work for some time now with this injured back. At one point I was bedridden but thankfully now I'm up and walking again, though for only short distances. I'm down to using a cane now (better than a walker like I was). Also most of you know that I have thrown myself on a major diet to which I've had some success. I'm down almost 110 pounds and other then my back I feel pretty good. I'd like to thank my family, friends, and neighbors for all the love and support during this trying time. I'm hoping to be under the 300 mark by the start of the car show season. I couldn't have done it without you all.
Glad that you are feeling better and good luck on the weight loss. Anything, well most anything, can be done if you set your mind to it and a little perseverance. Just about this time last year I decided that I had smoked long enough, 60 years, and quit cold turkey the same as I did when I quit drinking some 25 tears ago.
Glad your getting better, back pain sucks. Keep on the diet, that's great on the 110 pound loss, that will help the back a a lot!
Jim, congrats on losing the weight and good luck losing more! I hope your back keeps getting better so you can continue to have fun with your family and rods!
HI jim one my dad's favorite sayings was ( IF YOU THINK YOU CAN OR YOU THINK YOU CAN'T EITHER WAY YOU'LL BE RIGHT) good luck jim you can do it
Looking good Jim! How's the back?
Good one Jim and she sounds awesome.
Nice, I just got a shot of motivation again.
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I thought I had notification set up to notify me when someone replied but I didn't get anything. My back is much better thanks but my legs are very weak and I'm very unstable on my feet and my legs go numb if I over do it. I've lost 120 pounds so far. The proof is in the pudding. I actually got into my wife's car the other day and not only did I fit but I could reach the door safety locks and the shifter. Both I couldn't even come close to doing before. I surprised my daughter by picking her up at beauty school the other day in the wife's car and she was so proud of me. We drove around for over an hour together. We had a blast!
Check your spam folder Jim, all my CHR notifications lately have been going there..........something's changed in the addressing that rings the spam bell.
Great to hear Jim. Hopefully they can figure out if they can do anything for your legs.
WAY TO GO ON THE DIET JIM, HOPEFULLY YOU'LL BE BACK AT THE 34 SOON! Whoops caps lock on again! :)
It's amazing how one tiny thing can make a huge difference in your driving experience. In this case a 4" convex mirror affixed to my peep mirror on the 34 Chevy. With the flat mirror in the position it was in, it reflected against the side window effectively canceling the reflection thus rendering it useless. With the convex mirror I can now see perfectly. No more wondering if there is a car in the other lane and having my daughter look out the back window to see if it's clear.
I just about killed my back the other day. I couldn't take it any more. I had taken the 32 out the other day and it embarrassed the hell out of me by not starting in front of my daughters schoolmates. So I pulled the solenoid off and replaced it with a new unit only to find out that it was having even more trouble starting. It was acting like the battery was dead and it was clicking while I went to start it. I was at a buddies house when it did it and he's kind of a car nut and we narrowed it down to the engine not being grounded. So I grounded the engine to the frame and lo and behold it starts like a dream. So then I laid into my car and it's stupid latch mechanism in the door. That was fun, it took almost 3 hours to get that stupid latch out. There's about 25 screws holding the door panel in as well as a garnish molding with of all things drywall screws! I literally had to bend the sheet metal in the door in order to get the latch out and get the new one in. the three bolts holding it into the door jamb were painted over several times and were a total bitch to get loose. I'm happy to announce I've put on over 200 miles without the door popping open but now the speedo isn't working...Sigh! It's always something. Then went to a show with her car and it wouldn't start again! Damit! Today was install the new mini starter day. Hopefully this does it. Pain pills and a cup of tea. I'm beat.
Sorry to learn of your troubles Jim.
Hope the new starter cures it.
Keep working to get healthy.
The life changes you made haven't been easy.
But it just doesn't seem as miserable when the self-inflicted pain was incurred doing something you love.
Keep chasing the gremlins. You'll get them all in time.
you and me both. I figure the only other thing it could be is the switch on the column. If it is I'm gonna be pissed.
Thanks guys for the encouragement.
Don't get me started on that. While I was laid up I told my wife to take my daily for a ride once a week to keep the battery fresh and the fluids moving. She hates my car so she didn't. So $174 later for a new battery I start it up and the valve covers are pissing oil. All that because she doesn't want to drive it. I can't catch a break. Plus the studded snows are still on it and those need to be changed. I don't mean to complain. She does a lot more good for me then bad and for me life isn't too bad at all. I'm still vertical. Remember: It's always better to be seen than viewed!
