It's a unique and really amazing ride. Congrats on the rode trip too.
what's the clips holding on the header wrap? Don't think I've seen those before?

Thanks for the info.
Hit a few self serve salvage yards this morning looking for cheap parts and ran across this......

Rear disc on a BMW, paper thin!

Yeah, sure it was. You ever price parts for a beemer?
That's only part of the reason that car was in the bone yard!
I'd say he got his moneys worth out of that part!
I have never been completely happy with the headlights on the truck and decided to try out a different set. They are Model A reproductions and will be mounted near the wheels and will turn with the steering. They will also be positioned near the trucks original location when pointed straight ahead. Made the mounting brackets today.
Started with a paper template.

Then cut the brackets out of a piece of scrap

Painted the brackets and will install with the headlights tomorrow.

I mounted the headlights today but am not happy with the way they look. Too far apart and too conservative.

from position on first photo move towards center 6-8 " on each side to where they don't quite get in the v patern of the hood I think they would look about right somewhere in that area. Just my thoughts, king of wher the shocks are now only in front of them.
Very nice on getting your truck done and taking it on such a cool trip! There were a lot of sweet rides there. Thanks for sharing the vid. Congrats on your win at the show too! How'd you fair after the hurricane?
Thanks! Got back in time to sand bags some things and then evacuate. We were not allowed back in for a week due to all the trees and power lines that were down. Fortunately, we only lost what was in the freezer. A few homes were badly damaged but most got lucky when it came to trees falling. Also, landfall timing changed a bit and it came in at low tide instead of high tide as predicted. Thanks for asking.
Well, i tried the Model A lights in every position imaginable but did not like any of them or there were interference issues. This is what I went with along with a single motorcycle light on each spindle (not in photos). I installed an amber led in the lower sockets of the vw buckets also. These lights along with the lights in the bull horns will serve as running lights as well as blinkers. As an added benefit, the headlights actually meet the minimum height requirement in my state.

Some Indian motorcycle teardrop lenses might look good.
More nice work sir! That's good to hear you didn't lose much at all. Those storms get crazy quick. I never realized how bad they were until we hauled campers down to Katrina. A year later we hauled more down and got caught in a hurricane. It wasn't near the size of Katrina, but bad enough when you're trying to get in and out.
Just my humble opinion.. (and we all know what opinions are like right? Yep they all stink!) but those headlights are just so... "in your face". no pun intended.. I think the lights in the horns are the only ones with a good "fit". They are there but don't detract from the overall look. :HMMM:
Hey! You asked so I answered. It's the only part of the build that made me pause and even the engine cover didn't trip that trigger!:LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:
Looking good and cool
Thanks for your input. If you have any concerns that I can't take a critique, take a look at one of the first responses that I got on this thread
"Well welcome to the site and please take this whatever way you wish, but you have put your project out there for all to see and comment on.
What the heck are you thinking putting the front axle and wheel way out in front od the VW cab ? You are not only chopping the hell out of it, you are removing what leg room there was in it,(the cab). Wouldn't it looked better with a IFS set up with the cab set up like original over the front wheels ? You could still have the mid mounted engine etc and especially as you mention in the video that you will have the original rear tray built to look sort of standard.
I just think you have started with a cool idea but got completely lost when it came to the front and where the cab should be. I believe you are going to create a bloody ugly mismatched bodied vehicle.
Of course this is just my opinion and it is your vehicle to build the way you want. I just think there is too much ugly coming from the modern car designers now without adding to the mix by taking a cool VW truck and F..King it."
So regarding the hood...is the pause due to the fact that no hot rod should have a hood
I remember that first post when it was new...
And I love all of your "rides" - you have a great imagination and know how to make it all come together.
I was merely struggling with someplace to blend in the headlights you've chosen. I knew you could handle the critique, unless I caught you on a "bad day" kind of thing. I just hated to complain and offer something more constructive.
But thanks for listening!:LOL::LOL::LOL:
No problem. Thanks for chiming in! BTW, just posted a new build thread

While the transmission is out for a rebuild I am making a few improvements. Adding a second radiator for highway driving in the summer and some duct work to push the radiator heat out thru the hood instead of into the engine compartment.

Also drilled holes in the side scoop and sheet metal to allow the heat to escape. There is a block off plate inside the scoop between the air intake (front) and the radiator exhaust area so that cool air goes thru the trans cooler and is then sucked back out as it is pushed thru the radiator

Warranty Update:
Bit of a long story. I basically built the truck around this transmission so 11 of the 12 months of warranty expired before I ever drove it. The transmission was well out of warranty at the time of failure but had actually only seen 12 months of use before it started acting up and only one more month before total failure. Hughes agreed to send a truck to pick it up and emailed me to say that it would cost me little to nothing for the repairs. After they received the transmission and saw that the output splines were twisted

they asked me for the details of the vehicle. I sent them numerous build photos and specs..weight, horsepower etc. They responded that they felt the truck was too heavy for this dragster transmission (3020 lbs) and that my large rear tires were providing too much traction for their 650 hp rated transmission (my engine 400 hp). They wanted to upgrade the trans in many ways so that it would hold up without issue. I told them that I was not interested in spending more money on it and too please put it in a box and send it back to me. They countered with warrantying the trans rebuild to original specs, if I would pay for shipping both ways, but that they felt that this version of the trans was not suited for my application. I mentioned that I could install it in my V8 Daihatsu HiJet as it weighs 1800 lbs and has skinny tires and agreed to pay shipping. My intention with the VW was to reconfigure the truck for a 4L80e, but after a conversation with FTI Performance in Florida, I was assured that their 1100hp Powerglide would be more than adequate. The FTI trans is in the truck and nearly back on the road. The big three day Caffeine and Octane event is coming up soon on Jekyll Island with Velocity Channel so I am hard at work finishing it up! Hughes did not have to warranty the trans at all and as something is better than nothing, I am not complaining.

That is weird the out put shaft twisted like that. In my opinion you'd have to beat that pretty bad to twist that. Especially with 400hp. I can't imagine you were foot brake launching this a lot were you?
