The old vw cabs are pretty small. In my 66 bus, my line of sight is about an inch below the top of the windshield. The top of the shifter is even with the steering wheel, so closer to the height of my elbow.
Its in Park, but you get the idea
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3...928_125856.jpg
Your earlier pictures looked to me like the shifter was about 6" longer. I like that length as shown, FWIW....
The Powerglide transmission that I am using has a transbrake and a manual valve body, which means that I will be shifting between 1st and 2nd a lot. The shifter allows you to slide the lever out of drive and into neutral but not back again without pressing the button. That said, I modified the shifter with a neutral lockout to eliminate the possibility of accidentally winding up in neutral. I drilled and tapped a 10-24 thread into the shift gate in inserted a grade 8 machined bolt into it.

Wiring, wiring and more wiring! It is slow tedious work, but making good progress. I am using some diy plug connections and wire looming.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E...04_resized.jpg
Might be slow,, but it looks good from here.
Great work!
Thanks!
I have made it from the rear of the truck to the rear bulkhead of the cab
Wired so far:
tail lights, reverse lamp, tag light, back up camera, trailer connection, gas tank sending unit, radiator and transcooler fans, trans brake, distributor 12v and tach, electric choke, all gauge leads, alternator, starter and thru bulkhead connections on the rear cab wall

Well,,Ben..What can I say.. I like the innovation.. Not exactly what I would do,,but,,I can't knock your workmanship.. You are a brave dude..;);).. It's definitely going to stop people in their tracks..and make no mistake about that.. I salute you,mate.. That's a kool piece of engineering..:cool:
Yes, what he said! Keep up the great work..
What they both said.
That's cooler than a cool thing.
Took a break from the wiring today to work on frame work to support quick release rear body panels

There is one thing for sure, ANYBODY who has watch this beast being built will have no doubt who the owner is if they happen to run across it at a car/truck show or on the street. It's definitely one of a kind....joe
Thanks, yes it does stand out a bit!
Lots of progress on the wiring today.

The wiring is 95% done. The dog has been helping!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-t...06_resized.jpg
Hey,check out the ears on that guy.. he can probably hear the electrons passing through the wires..
JK, JK, JK, he looks like a guys best friend. :)
When I bring our shepard into the garage to help she snags the rag from my back pocket and lays around tearing it apart. Or finds a stick and carries it in to chew it to bits and leaves the mess for me to clean up.:HMMM::mad:
I'll just leave her in the house!:p:cool:
He does have great hearing! He does have his ways to relieve the boredom as well. He likes to collect acorns, get comfortable on a folded welding blanket and break them up. Thankfully he does not eat them.

Got something done on several things today.
Routed the negative battery cable in conduit under the cab, but ran out of clamps
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3...57_resized.jpg
Stripped the original seat frames of what was left of seat covers. Went over everything with a wire wheel on an angle grinder and sprayed them with some rusty metal primer.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8...38_resized.jpg
Rough cut some sheet metal to fill in the inside of the rear fenders. Going to roll some beads into them and then weld in. This is the last of the welding that needs to be done before I can put gas in the tank.

The wiring harness is done and installed.
The steering wheel is finished up. I called the local upholstery shops, so far one returned call out of 3. My one response will wrap it in leather for $120. It is a lot of work, but not sure how good that price is. Waiting to hear from the other two. I removed the quick release hub, as it was way too sloppy. Also welded in a mounting plate to bolt on a spinner and avoid the typical lousy fit.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h...09_resized.jpg
Also finished up the rear sway bar install. I was having a bit of a clearance issue with the bar and the gas tank but solved it by modifying some factory sway bar link bolts. They have a very thin but wide head but had to machine off a large shoulder to fit my application.
Original on the left, modified on the right.

Tested the wiring harness. Couple of small glitches, nothing major.

Pocket in corner of the bed for venting and hauling greasy items or just things that I don't want sliding around, chain etc.
This will be hidden by the Bed Sides

Thanks!

Welded on some Dzus fasteners for a removable cover over the charcoal canister behind the left rear wheel.

Took the measurements for an Aluminum Treadplate bed floor. Going to the big city soon to pick it up. They have a huge shear so I can get the size I want and nice smooth lines.
