Thinking about what to do for upholstery?Kind of stuff I do when I'm out of parts for a time!
If you can make your self a drawing.
Trying to think ahead some on what to do helps on my old rod. This time,I know I will not put it back all black like it was=too hot to set on in Florida sun,but back then the black vinyl was a free-B from Nuwt.
Anyway I'm painting rod the same way ,all hi gloss black, with the yellow motor.
Thinking black and yellow upholstery to match. But this time, were we're sitting mostly yellow with black outer framing.
Here's how I'm working out my ideas. I first make my self a drawing with just out lines shown in fairly plan photo,no detail and copy that a few times so I can then add detail a few other ways.
I only did 1/2 the detail here cuz I got lazy after trying to do too much on the first drawing in next post.,but same design both sides with black about 5 or 6in. panel down center
I'm liking #2 drawing cuz door an side panel match seat best, both have two yellow roll-n-plates panels. Rug all black.
What an excellent idea with the drawings. Have you thought about using an off white / cream colour upholstery with the yellow insert ? There is a guy on the Hamb building a T who is living in Arizona and he has the same problem, black upholstery is too darn hot for sitting on so is going with a white trim. Another idea is all white with yellow piping around the edges.
Hi Whiplash23T,thanks,
I've been playing with ideas, using the yellow as every were I'm actully setting ,but keeping the black also that I had in her in highschool kind of helps me not to get too far from how I had the old gril. These were some other ideas I did on drawing, but turned out the one I like best is with two panels that match seat.
No, the top or first drawing is the way to go but that is just my humble opinion too.
I like the top one as well and you are a very good artist!
I kinda like the second one with the diamonds touching, it's unique and a cool design.
I'd prefer the lower one with the diamonds not touching.. If you were asking.... LOL...:):):D
I figguerd I'd post all the drawings and maybe they could also give some one some ideas for there own cars. Thanks for yu'all's input.
I had deside on the first drawing as my go with.
I appreciate all you guys whom share your interior builds as I'm going to rework mine this winter. Bye bye purple!
OK got the stain and varnish on the wood parts, good enough for me. Yes the dash topper is real wood too. Will have to remove for shiny high gloss black body paint coming soon.
The walnut stain came fairly close to matching the steering wheel that J.J. gave me. I also redid the wood slats on folding rack,so when I do have that on,it will all tie together well.
Bat, awesome work on the wood work!
Looks great, Bat! I'm not saying that your parts need anything else, but when I read a woodworking magazine article, "Finishing Your Finish", it opened my eyes to the fact that the same process we use for "color sanding" and then buffing out the final coat on auto paint applies equally to wood if you want that "smooth as glass" look. I use 0000 steel wool as the applicator for Johnson's or Minwax brand paste wax (basically the same product), rubbing briskly but not too aggressively and going easy on the edges, then buff it off with an old T-shirt or other soft cloth. Gives it that nice glow, and protects your finish some, too.
The wood looks great on the car Bat!!!! Really going to be a nice accent, especially on the back rack!!!!
Bat, I always enjoy seeing developments based on open Model A bodies. However I see you last posted at mid day so you did not have any difficulty attaching the nice pictures. Recently I am unable to attach pictures so I am wondering if you have noticed any difference in the procedure?

The two proven methods, embraced by management, are detailed here - http://www.clubhotrod.com/shop-talk/...tml?highlight=, but it's necessary to follow the steps and not try to free lance. ;)
The wood trim that came on repop 28 to 31 folding rack was to red to match,so sanded an stained it also but it is some type of red wood and don't seem to take the stain like the other dose, but little better match now, really only going to run the folding rack when wife is coming with me,but don't look too bad now.;)
Bat the wood is sweet , i am missing my oldest dream already . This is what makes a car stand out .
.
Bat,
If you ever decide you want that folding rack to match the darker shades try using Aniline Wood Dyes, mixed to any shade you want - Aniline Dyes
Thanks, its kind of good enough for now, maybe later I'll mess with them rack slats more after frying all the other fishs in need,wiring/paint ect.
Bat, nice work!
I agree, it's more than "...good enough..." it looks just fine as it is. I have not used the aniline dyes yet myself, but learned about them at a small custom furniture shop in Maine. They use mostly maple, some cherry, and a few exotics but lots of clear pine for stool & chair seats but they get precise color match with different woods mated together. The shop owner told me the secret is aniline dyes, and that they can precisely match an existing finish, like if someone has a table and four chairs but wants them to make two more chairs to match. They use an alcohol lacquer top coat, sanded and waxed. Beautiful stuff!
I just mentioned it for a future reference, and in case someone else is doing woodwork and might be struggling to get the color they want, especially with different types of wood.
Roger that might come in handy with scratches in old wood furniture too! Bat I love the gloss and the way the wood has a three dimensional look to it.
These guys have everything for touching up anything!

Kewl deal Bat, borrow the kid's car and instantly your famous!!! Or, is that infamous????:LOL:
Great job.. you're a natural behind the mic'..:LOL:
To bad about the beer being overheated too!:LOL:**):p
Finely got the high gloss black back on my old gal ,after a few weeks of sanding and filling, needs some buffing out yet,but pretty good anyway being painted in my back yard, even got a buddy hotrodder John Fenner to come over and help do some spraying, man its nice to have help:D Back yard fun.
Looks good, Bat! Good idea on the aluminum foil "masking". I'll have to remember that one....
Looking good Bat! Now it's time to get things together for the final time again?????
Put some parts back on,an started on my upholstery. Here is a look at the panels an rug, I just did. Got to do seats next.
Looking good and at the speed you are going you will be back cruising the Florida Keys with your Son real soon.
It looks really nice! The black really sets that wood work off too!
Ditto! Looks very nice, like the wood too!
When doing the panels,I had a lot prob's with the back side of the prepleated yellow,it has a very thin backing that screws up EZ in the feet of sewingmachine:eek:. I found a work around by adding 2in. masking tape to the back on were my edge is and I'm going to sew.:D This work well,so now I did the seats too.
Nice touch Bat
Looks great, Bat. This is just a guess, but I'm betting this car is a lot nicer than when you built it the first time...
The interior really came out nice, Bat!!!!!!
There are for sure some nicer parts;,New steeringwheel n column, the high polish stainless steel was only some alum sheet way back, the rims were just steel, and my upholstery is a lot better now,I made better headers this time,,I've added the aircleaner on a 4bbl///had 2x4 set up wayback with no aircleaners at all,but there long gone n way too high $ to get back.
The rest is pretty much as it was.
One things for sure.. You won't lose it in a parking lot! :D
Looks great now!
