Got a lot done , Got it to roll again on it's own wheels. Even hooked up shocks and brake lines.
But 2 steps foreword and one back. I had rebuilt my front brake about two and hafe years ago,but they just sat this hole time and have already turned back to rusted crap,so had to order new front brake clys. Most of the rest is shaping up again. I ran brake lines and was thinking I could bleed them, when hiding cly rust shit hit fan by leaking out the drum,so redo.
Fitted Y-block back in,still a lot of little things to do before getting back to big stuff like body, paint and intearier, windsheild ect.
Hey Bat, that old Y Block sure does look good in there!!!!! Haven't ran one of them for many moons, would be fun to find a 312 some day and a suitable project to put it in!!! Thanks for the inspiration!
Everything is looking really good, keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!
Awesome work! When you were welding on your frame, did you just watch the levels and if you say any change, just move to the other side or opposite corner to counter the heat transfer?
The car is coming along beautifully.
One thing that I would counsel you on is the running of the plug wires. When wires are run in parallel and close together like that, or close to a conductive surface like the back of the block, they can transfer energy one to the other wire(s) or ground out to the block/head and cause mis-fires or at the least, reduced spark at the plug. Loom separators should be made from non-conductive material (wood, plastic, fiberglas) and each wire should be at least one inch from any other wires if they are to run parallel (like railroad tracks). Where two wires must cross each other, cross them like this (+), thereby eliminating a parallel run.
I know about induesed spark, and thanks for pointing it out if some one dose not know. In this case I'm using both better then Ford wire and its on the motor as Ford did it with those black stands,so it will be fine,it worked years ago with not as good wire. This is old factory Ford coil and reistor,so it's not like HEI spark that would jump between ether.
Funny story though,at one time back in the early 1960s,they sold some fanzy sparkplug wire the you could see throgh, with a red tint to it,very pertty, but when it would get hot, spark just jumped every were. Had to take that new stuff off.
I desided to move my plate mount from under the left tailight to centered on the rear. :cool:I'm adding a 1928/31 folding luggage rack behind beerkeg gas tank on some temp brackets that will hold in place by two big wingnuts. This is going to be so I can bring along my wifes wheelchair to shows for her to come along. The plate would not be seen as EZ if I left it in it's old spot.;)
Hi Bat,
You've come a long way since I saw this project last. I just discovered this thread today... I just recently (finally) got my track-T on the road. When we get 'em both done we'll have to meet at a cruise-in or rod run somewhere.
I had a close friend here in Auckland that had Muscular Dystrophy who was a Rodder and we all took turns of taking him out in his '39 Oldsmobile on runs etc.. It used to take two of us to lift his electric wheel chair into the boot of the Olds but we never complained as he enjoyed the outings. So, what I'm trying to say is, I admire you for thinking about how to transport your wife's wheel chair so that she can enjoy the events too, sir you have my utmost respect.
Mark.
My son did a vid today 4 me,as we got the old gal going. You can also see the folding lugage rack in place on the back, now that completed those brackets too.
My old Ford Y-block motor has been hinding in the corner of garage for many years doing nothing.
Some times they don't like to wake up!
Stuburn but she goes, did not wish too!, We pumped up oil psi before trying to run,.
Had not run at all for 3 years, and then only for 2 min. on the floor on blocks, before that I'm guessing it had not been running for around 30 years +. I'm happy about it now, great oil PSI,45# @ 180*. She'll need the valves adjusted and another carb. yet,if I can find a 4100 in rebuildible shape, don't need choke, also got replace water pump/its leaking some.
Here's the vid;
1957 Y-Block Start Up in my 1928 Ford Roadster Hotrod - YouTube
Thanks for the video, great seeing the old Y block back to life!
Congratulations, Bat!:D Is that the engine from your original roadster? How similar is this build to the original?
For the most the very same parts. lots of racecar builds in between though. Rod build wise, same but a few updates like duelmaster and a set of Slot rims my buddy Ed gave me, I got a new alum rad too. Added into design a folding lugage rack to hold wifes wheelchair on back,it comes off with two big wingnuts if she is not going on the ride.
Back when I took my rod apart in 65, cuz I got a wife and needed things for our new house,I had sold off a few parts, the head lights, rearend, windsheild and tank, both doors, the RPM tach, seats, but most other stuff just got store away[not very well I'm afrade,I should of done better, lots of rust and things going bad.] The y-block got put into our 57 Ford wagon as our dayly,I shortly after replaced Y-block with the Y I'm using. I have alway had a habbit of getting Y-motors when ever they are offered,so have 2 more Y's in the shed missing a few parts but there,as back up.
Very cool! You'll be out picking up chicks in no time.;)
That rack looks excellent on the back there and I would tend to leave it there as a feature. Yes the old girl put up a bit of a fight but soon laid down it's arms in surrender. Sounds better good for a unit that has sat for so long.
She starts up now nicely, but still smokes, may clear up after running for longer time or not we'll see..
The 2bbl intake and carb that I had put on to get the 292 to run,was not excatly as good as said by the guy I got it from, but I'm sure he didn't know that who ever had rebuilt the 2bbl carb, had left out the check ball under the booster screw=thats why carb was working funny. Even funnyer is I found the ball just raddeling around in exc.pump housing, and yes the other ball was in place as it should be behind the pump. Werid but fixed
got the body mounted and bolted down to frame, adjusted doors, added footboard to back of firewall, and worked on windsheild stanions, over weekend.
That's some great progress Bat! It's got to be a blast putting this one back together, lots of memories wrapped up in that fiberglass and metal I would imagine?????
Yes Dave, has been a trip to the past as I remeber some things I forgot after trying to do it again, ton of fun! These no fiberglass now or then, but have some glazzing puddy to smooth out some rust pits that seem a lot deeper now. Next thing to find or make some how is alternator working and some glass for windsheild. The hotrod piggy bank is really getting low,so my plan 4 a new one wire Alt. is out,I'll need to fig a way of using stock Ford Alt. I have to find a Ford reg for it. I got two old Ford alt. but no regs.
Along with other little stuff on my list, getting closer to a good old time ride around!.
Bat,
I don't know anything about Ford alternators, but stock internally regulated GM's only require 2 wires. They're easy to wire, cheap, and that's all I've ever used. Sometimes my local junkyard guy will give me one for free! He says nobody buys used alternators or starters...
Just found this thread tonight great fun reading up to date and nice progress!
Ran out of $ for some parts for carb kit/alt. parts/windsheild glass ect.,so working with what I do have around.
This week been working on the inside panels for doors, kick and seat sides. Made some cardboard patterns to work out the right sizes before cutting up the door skin wood I had for other house work. They will be held in after padding is added by some Stainless steel screws and SS cone washers. Still got to deside the color but later.;)
The woodworking should work out good!!!! But, that ultra-trick new steering wheel really caught my attention!!;);):LOL::LOL:
Just messin' with ya Bat, most all of us here do the same thing from time to time!!!!
Genuine " Visegrip " only I hope for the steering wheel ? I wouldn't like you having an accident due to you having cheap Taiwanese grips doing the hard yards. Thanks for the pictures of your seat base and interior as it is giving me good ideas as to how to tackle my interior when time comes.
For pushing my rod in and out of garage very fast,I'm using that classic steering gear, but could not get the sueaside nob to fit on them!
As for ideas for insides,I did a tech some time ago, when helping my son build his "T";http://www.clubhotrod.com/upholstery...ts-panels.html
My 28A roadster rod is going to be highgloss black body n frame with yellow motor again same as it was,but not all black seats, that was way too hot, trying to deside on colors for seats n panels, thinking 2 colors, maybe black n yellow or brown yellow center panels, what other cobos may work? Think of limiting amount of dark colors so not too hot on my old butt, lite color center panel design with darker outer trim.
Ideas and any photos would help for ideas?
Always like using stuff I have saved when it can look great and not cost anything kind of.
My buddy Rosh was working out at Miami Int. Airport some years back, when they were tairing down one of old artdeco buildings. He saw them trashing out a stainless steel wall and was able to save some of it for me,knowing I love old shiny stuff. This stuff is got dimples made into it,so it looks very industrel kind of like big rivets, very cool looking for the time.
I talked a little about the firewall we did for my son's "T" out of a peace of this stuff also,I'm going to do the same thing to my own and also the back panel that was shiny alum in 1959 but gone bad now. You can see in other old photos in thread the back of rod were the old shiny alum did show. This stainless should be better on both firewall and rear. The photo below shows a cleaned up part of the scrap Rosh got for me years ago from Airport wall, and beside it a cut to fit part for rear of my rod. Holly crap this stuff is hard to cut, used up 5 cut off wheels and two bandsaw blades.
The #2 photo is of the firewall part of the old artdeco stainless inplace as I'm working on it. Now days I think the young guys call it bling!
The firewall's very cool, and the price is even better!! Great job!
Looks like you put a rolled edge to it too! What makes it even cooler is the dimple pattern, vs. the more popular diamond plate. Got to love the free stuff whenever you can recycle/reuse it!
That is so cool and makes my plain flat stainless firewall look boring, and as mentioned, excellent price to pay.
I love the firewall, it turned out awesome!
thanks ,i'm trying to get the old gal back together with out much $,but I had even less when i did it the first time was lucky to win a few shows with it in the early 1960s,a lot of nice stuff out there now days.
A little at a time!
An old racing buddy came by to look at my rod,an offered to make the glass for my windshield, wow,I gave him my 28A roadster frame to take with him and he returned with some glass in it. I know he tryed hard, but it was not fitting right and he bent the frame gitting glass in to it. I saw it but said nothing but WOW thanks and after he left I took it out and fixed the frame, plus got some new 80grit disk for my 4.5in. grinder and very slowly with out getting it hot, ground down about 1/4in. lumps,6 of them tell it fits right now, that took about 4hr. of slow work. These little things are very nice of my feneids to do for me,so no way I'm going to tell him anything but thank you, with out his help,I'd be with out glass for many months saving up $ for it[around $150+ I think} was a free-B,very COOL.
You're a good man, Bat!!!
That was really nice of him and good on you for seeing what he did. Anymore you can't hardly help anyone without getting something bad in return and you won't even know it at the time.
Thanks, adds to enjoymint knowing a few others get some idea that can help them!
For my 71st B-day,my son got me a chrome one wire GM alt.,so I took off the 6wire not chrome Ford alt and remot reg.,I did a small mod to the bracket for fitting GM and looks good now, lots less wiring.
That's awesome and it looks great!
Started trying to do the wood lip around the rear of cockpit,so it will both hold snaps for top and the upholstery under it. I looked at some Oak to do it with, but cost was 3x what popluer was,,going to stain it anyway to kind of match steeringwheel ,dash and rear rack
