But, to answer Johnboy's question - no home builder Federal requirement on welds - nor even any inspection. As far as any state - probably not and for sure, none in New York State. If there were, most anyone working at a state inspection station wouldn't have a clue. It's amazing what you see - from Randy's to bird poo - they all 'pass' (mine are somewhere between the two levels of quality)Dave W
I am now gone from this forum for now - finally have pulled the plug

I like the frame, but the highly trained guard cat hanging around the shop is way kewl!!!! Used to have a shop cat, switched to a shop dog about 7 years ago, can't imagine building without the company!!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Here in Massachusetts there is a visual inspection as to the "quality" of the assembly/ assemblies. Totally at the discretion of the inspector (aka state trooper). I have no idea what the process would be if a dispute arose. Also, what knowledge / experience / qualification of the inspector?? And this is only a one time deal when you first attempt to register a completed car. If you bought the car from someone and it had already been registered, then the paperwork/tags is simply computer data entry.
Most of the "ratty" style rides that "we" would call into question are usually a re-done car so they don't ever go through any inspection process as they were already registered.
Lastly, we also have an annual vehicle inspection. For safety and emissions. My car is exempt as a replica, so I have it easier than someone who went and got his car registered as a "Real" 1934 Ford! The only emission equipment I'm required to have is a pcv valve! Those guys with the "real" cars have to meet the requirements for the year of manufacture for their motor and ALL emmisions equipment must be in place. But the reality is that the local shops do a cursory inspection, lights / wipers / plate light / glass / "mufflers".. that kind of thing, check the balljoints/kingpins.. look at the tire tread and move on.

Thanks.
And thanks Dave too.

Randy I hear ya on cats.
My old cat Goff would follow me around the place like a shadow, totally ignoring the missus.
I was setting up some steel to be welded one day while sitting on a wee box, with my helmet up and my handpiece hanging across my knee.
The cat was sitting alongside me on the front tyre of the tractor, and decided to jump onto my lap.
I jumped, my helmet fell closed, and mashed the cigarette I had in my mouth into my face and down my shirt-front.
I jumped again, and dropped my hand-piece onto the work I was setting up, where it promptly arced.
When I got things back under control Goff was nowhere to be seen.
But he forgave me...he came back...as smoochy as ever...

That must have been funny to see..
The first time I got down on my hands and knees to weld something.. And my first cat jumped up on my back.. I didn't know what the H*** was going on.. Everything went flying... It was only me and him in the shop.. And out from no where's something jumps on your back.. Talk about a crazy feeling.. So from that point on.. When I bent over to do somethng.. I would always think he was coming..
My first cat.. He would watch me back up to my car trailer. Laying in the yard.. He wouldn't do anything until I set the trailer on the ball.. When the trailer hit the ball.. He was running to the trailer.. I didn't catch it at first.. But after a while.. I seen what he was doing..
One day my truck was backed up to the trailer, But not hooked up.. A friend stopped by,, we was talking and I could see him hinding in the flower bed watching..I looked at my friend and said.. Watch this.. I started to set the trailer down on the ball,, When the trailer hit the ball.. He came running and slid onto the trailer.. My friend looked at me and said.. Look's like he want's to go for a ride...
I said.. Yes he does !!!!

Thanks again.. And Happy New Years..
We are going to have this one checked out by the state trooper..
We have one here that does all the Hot rods.. He is finishing up right now on another friends car I just built.. It nice, But not like this one.. My friend said when the state trooper went over to his house to see it... He was flipping out on how nice we made it.. Being a Kit Car.... So I think when he see's this one, He will go nut's for sure... I hope anyway..
We will see.. I have to get in good with him....
Funny thing is.. A while back I built a few trailers.. The very first one I did. I went to get some paper work on it at the state troopers office... And when he came out to check it.. He looked at me !!!! Then Looked at the trailer !!!! Then back at me !!!! And said.. Are you sure you built this ?? I said Yeap !!! Heres the pictures !!!! He said it looked like I stoled it off a trailer lot...hehehehe
I said Nope !!! He said it looked like a factory built trailer.. I said.. You know a guy built them Factory built trailers.. He just looked at me... I then said.. I'm no different then a guy at the factory.. He said you make a good point..He went on to say.. I never had to stamp a home made trailer this nice before..
When I went back with the next one.. He just looked at me and smiled..
As far as that cat... His brother was my shop cat.. But he passed away.. He would come running everytime I hooked on to my car trailer and wanted to ride on it.. So one day I took him down the street.. He looked like a big dog going for a ride.. That cat was something.. And had to be in every picture... No matter what I was taking a picture of...
Now this cat is just like he was... They say a dog is mans best friend.. I think that goes for a cat too..He has a chair in my shop just for him.. My friends get a kick everytime they come over.. He will go up to them and check them out.. I will look at him.. And say.. Go get in your chair !!!!! He goes everytime.. They tell me.. I have never seen a cat do something like that...If I can only train him to get tool's now..
Set no Limit's on yourself !!!!

Yeah, when I had the cat, his spot was a blanket on top of my toolbox he'd curl up on... My dog has his own blanket on the floor, his main thing is to hit up everyone that comes in there for a dog biscuit! If someone comes in and doesn't give him a treat or two in the first couple minutes he sits on the floor in front of them, glares for awhile, then one bark to remind them of the price of admission!!!!! He also thinks he has to go everywhere with me, loves to ride in the pickup and in the toter, if someone takes "his" seat, they end up with a dog in their lap!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
