Insurance writes off everything as a loss on smoke damage. There are some geally great cleansers available. For ceramics and such, I used diluted non acidic coil cleaner. I absolutely was able to save at least half of out smoke damaged goods after our fire. It just depends if the effort is worth it..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
