Dang it all I stand corrected, I'm gonna have to throw this revised book in the trash can.
I should know that because I got that same motor out in the garage.
Though in all truthfulness mine is closer to the Boss 351. HE! HE! shoooo
Thanks Tech for the correction, Kurt

    400 vs. 351

the 400 has never been given a chance to prove itself. i rebult a 400 for a customer who wanted a stock rebuild.it was in a 76 elite.big boat. a couple days after picking up his car he dropped by a asked me what the hell i did to his car.he said it never has ran this good and gas milage is way up. during the 70's the motors were running retarted cams. i just set the camstaight up,most were about 6-10 degrees retarted but some were retarted a lot more. 400/351Ms were designed as smog motors which made them real dogs but a good hotroder can fix it.

I built a 400m years ago for a friend of mine.
We didn't do much to it, cam, carb intake, and headers.
It went in to a 4 wheel drive pick up with 36's on it
It would smoke all 4's over dry pavement.
Plus they say the 4V heads off the cleveland work
better on the 400M because of the longer stroke.
Alot of the 351 Cleveland stuff fit the 400M's as well.
Crank rods and intake manifolds and push rods are
about the only thing that don't
interchange. Just about everything else will interchange.
Man is this a old thread. Kurt

An good trick to improving compression on the 400M is to stuff 351C pistions in it. IIRC it only required slight maching to the wristpin end of the connecting rod as the 351C piston was a full floating pin whereas the 400M was a press fit. Built a 400M for a buddy at the Airforce Base I was stationed at using these pistons, crower cam, headers and 4bbl intake. He was tickled pink and said it ran 10 times better than it ever had.

The 400Ms saving grace is that 4" stroke, the only 4" stroke Ford ever produced... except for the later model 5.4L Triton and 6.8 V10. Only other engines to come close to the 4" stroke were the FE428 and the Merc FE410 both comming in a 3.98"
