352-360-390 choice
i have a 1968 ford truck with 76000 org. miles it has a 360 which is running good but i want 400-450 hp and have ben told the 360 is not a real "performance" engine my dad has a 390 with close to 450 hp and he wont give it to me i also have a friend who has a rebuilt 352 that he says usually makes the same power the 390 makes . so should i build the 360 , swap in the 352 or wait till i find a good 390 ( i have a holly 600cfm 4barrel and a edlebrock performer 390 intake manifold.)

Find a 390--from what I've been told here and things I've read elsewhere, you'd be hard pressed, and money-pressed, to get a 352 to perform as well as a 390. If you are starting from scratch go with the 390, they are relatively easy to find and not too expensive and with a little work could easily get the performance you looking for. My two cents

Mercurys had a 410 in 67or 68,they are externally balanced like a 428 and if you are going to use a manual trans a flywheel might be hard to find but if you are going to use a automatic it might be something to look into.

If the 360 block you have is nice just throw a 390 crank, rods and pistons in it. The bore is the same but the 360 used a 3.50 stroke crank same as the 352. G.

68FordTruck, you already have a 390 in the making... or a 410. A 360 block has a 4.05" bore with a 3.50" stroke. The 390 uses a 4.05" bore and a 3.78" stroke so all you would need to do is swap in a 390 crank, rods, and pistons.
If you want to build a 410 (4.05" bore x 3.98" stroke), it's gonna take another part. The 3.98" stroke crank from the 428 is externally balanced so you will need the flywheel / flexplate with the offset counterweight.

Thank you for the help i think i will try to get a 390 out of a boneyard some where but most bone yards just have 80's stuff. any body know of a junkyard around olympia, washington that has 60's stuff or where i might stumble across a 390?

m&m jr i am curious has to what i would have 2 do to make 425 hp i already have an edlebrock performer 390 intake manifold and a holly 600cfm 4bbl would this help? cause i have been told the 360 is a "heavy duty motor" do you know what type of pistons my motor came with "stock" cause its pretty hard to make power with dome pistons. and its pretty toughf to find performance aftermaket stuff for the 360 , the 390 and 352 are common so will stuff for a 390 or 352 bolt up to my 360? thanx alot M&m JR that was a big help and im still open for suggestions thanx everyone!!

Everything that I've heard says that parts for 352 360 and 390 will pretty much bolt on to any of them. Even to go as far as getting the Dual quad intake that were special order on 390 and 427. I've been told that these bolt on to a 360 and 352 just like anything else. Something to think about if money isn't an issue

im 15 and working partime and trying to take mechanics the other part. so in mainly working off of old junk car and stuff from boneyards with the occasional mail order from jegs or summit racing. what im doing right now is putting on headers and dual flowmaster exaust that is going to exit about 8 inches behind the front wheel. so after i upgrade the exaust i want to upgrade the intake and carb. i think i will go with a 625 cfm holly and the edlebrock performer 390 manifold that i mentioned above, what do you guys think about that combo? and what would the cheapest and simpleist way to crank out 400 hp (i HATE nos, and dont like EFI)

If you're going with the 390 and that intake setup (although i would suggest a 650-700), if you do an over bore, I forget the exact specs you can overbore a 390, but I believe you can go .60 over, essentially turning it into a 412 or something like that. Overbore, electronic ignition (always better than points), your current intake setup, good valve job, headers, and you should be there, or close enough. If you have pics of your resto, I'm sure everyone one here would like to see them. When the weather breaks here, for good, i should be getting my cars out and starting my work. let us know how you're doing!

i was going to put that set up on my 360 because so far i havent found a 390. what do you think of my exaust? i've heard that where im going to put it in the long run it could damage my rims from the exaust hitting them is that true?

You can still bore the 360 but I don't know how much and that might be tougher to get your 400 hp out of. Sorry,I don't know anything about the trucks or the 4-speeds. I have C6 trannys in my cars, and they are pretty much frag proof. If you have a clear coat on your rims, which most aftermarkerts do these days, the exhaust could ruin them. Not to mention you might be breaking local noise restirctions Some surfing on the net might get you the answers your looking for, and shouldn't you be in school right now?!? Sorry, its the father in me asking
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
