Measure across the lobes perpendicular to the nose and heel of the lobes. Write that figure down. Now measure the lobes across the nose and heel of the lobes. Subtract the smaller from the larger and you'll have lobe lift. Multiply that by the rocker arm ratio and you'll have theoretical valve lift.

Using the cam lobe on the left side of this illustration titled "Starting on base circle of lobe", separate the lobe into 4 sections, North, South, East and West, just as if you were looking at a map. Using a micrometer or dial caliper, measure the North/South dimension. Write it down. Measure the East/West dimension. Write it under your North/South dimension. Subtract. Multiply the result times the rocker arm ratio (1.72) to find theoretical valve lift. Check the valve lift you just computed against the cam card or info on the box to see if they are close to the same.

wow. alot to learn, ,,here is what i got, using a dial caliper i got 1.784 north/south and 1.420 east/west.. that gives me.365 multiply that times 1.7 and i get .618... advertised lift is .556.. so what do you think ?

I think that's not the cam that came in that box.

that sucks, so with 618 lift does that make it a "bigger" cam..or is the smaller the number the more radical the cam.? i looked at summit and did not see anything above 582 lift

Yes, its a much bigger cam.
Here is a place with some good reading on different 429/460 builds.

ok, sorry for all this guys but im trying to learn this stuff, went to my dads and broke out his high dollar mic's remeasured, got a little different numbers also i calculated at 1.7 rockers, cam specs shows 1.73 and.. am i calculating intake lift or exhaust lift.. with me remeasuring and using different ratio, my measurements nailed the advertised exhaust lift of .588.. intake lift is 5.62.. also sumit online has different numbers listed than what was in the card with the cam even though the card has the same part number and edelbrock online is completely different than the card with the same part number,

still looking and buying parts, going to rebuild all at once, can keep driving it until i get everything, im still not sure on a distributor, HEI or not, HEI just look so big, i have the room, just not sure how that mass will look, if it will perform better, thats fine, if one is better than the other thats what i will go with. anyone have suggestions

instead of building a 429 go 460. all you need is a crank and a set of pistons, rods are the same 30 more c/i for the price of a crank. good deal.

maybe, will still have to decide on which distributor type to install though
