is the carb new? did u back fire thru the carb? if u did u prolly blew the power valve. did u see if ur idle screws are where u adjusted them. cause i am having a prob at idle but my cork gaskets that keep the idle screws from vibrating in and out are junk so they are never where i put them after running it for awhile. and do remember timing and fuel delivery give same symtoms.

Believe me, I know EXACTLY what you mean. That's why I run edelbrocks now.

Like I said before in another thread, maybe it's just a limitation of mine; but, I have never owned a Holley that I could tune so that it held it for much more than about 9-12 months. It always happened all of a sudden and they were running either way to lean and starving, way to rich and belching black smoke, or the power valve would fail etc.

The nicest thing about banging your head against a brick wall is that it feels good when you stop.

    Cheers,

The power valve is simply a "switch" that opens at a predetermined manifold vacuum, measured in inches of mercury (Hg). A vacuum passage in the throttle body transmits manifold vacuum to a chamber in the main body. When manifold vacuum drops, a spring opens a power valve in this chamber to admit extra fuel. This fuel flows through the power valve, through the power-valve channel restriction and into the main well. There it joins the fuel flow in the main metering system to enrich the mixture.
If the power valve is blown it can result in a very rich condition at idle.
Most of this information came from the Holley Carburetir Handbook by Mike Urich. If you're going to work on a Holley I highly suggest you get a copy of this book or one like it.

Not if you know how to adjust one, they'll run rings around any Carter or Edelbrock ever built.

I usta' run Holley's on all my stuff. Never had any issues with them once I got the right jets in 'em. Maybe I was lucky.
