Cool Helping a Brother in Need...

Just got off the phone with my brother to see if he can come over to help me try and figure this thing out before all my hair is gone. As it turns out he's got some problems of his own I didn't know about.

He's got an '88 chevy running a stock 305 throttle body. the engine always ran perfect until he let it sit for 2-3 months this past summer. After starting the engine for 5 minutes it starts to run rough with lots of black soot coming from the exhaust. Total loss of power. He stated that it seems to be loading up on fuel. He figured that it needed a tune-up because it had been some time since the last one. He changed the plugs, air filter, cap and rotor. None of these things have made any difference.

Again, the engine always ran well until it sat for 2-3 months. The motor is a totally stock chevy 305. electronic ignition and throttle body injection. Starting is no problem, 5 minutes later severe black soot from exhaust and loss of power.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Bart

Maybe a bad sensor that's giving the wrong signal once it warms up?????

What about old gas? Did the truck get driven just once in a while before it sat to where he didn't have to fill it up all the time and maybe it's old? Clean the fuel injectors? Sensor? That's all that I can think of....

you need to check and see if you have any codes in your computor. you can do this by jumping the A and B wires in the DLC. the dlc is located under the dash on the drivers side. give me the codes and i can tell you what it is.

Locate Data Link Connector (DLC), see image below.
Jump the A&B terminals(a paper clip or a jumper wire work ok)
Turn Ignition switch to ON position.
Count the flashes on the "CHECK ENGINE" or "SERVICE ENGINE" light.
FLASH, pause, FLASH, FLASH = code 12
NOTE: Some 94 & 95 models do not have the B terminal. In which case a scanner is required.

All vehicles after 96 are OBDII,and require a scanner to access hink of.... [/B][/QUOTE]

Thanks for the help. I jumped the terminals and get 2 different sequences of flashes. first seems to be flash(pause)flash flash. three times. Then flash(pause)flash flash flash flash flash. 3 times also.

    What do you think?

    lt1s10,

Oh, bye the way. The drawing was almost an exact match to what I found under the drivers side dash. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks again...
