Yes, you have to do both. Finger in the plug hole to feel compression as the piston is coming up from the bottom of the stroke, then forget about that and line up the 0 mark on the balancer. You should then be at TDC compression #1. A remote starter switch hooked to the starter solenoid makes it an easier one man job, or pull all of the plugs and use a breaker bar to turn the crank as you feel for compression.Roger
