    KC drag strip closure....

Here's an interesting read about the now closed drag strip, and a place for comments about the politicians that closed it!!!!!

Yep, a sad story indeed. KCIR is/was located down in a little valley off of Noland Road in south KC, and the problems started when a developer started building houses in the area, and the sound of the track resonated down the valley. As I recall they first tried to stop the night time activities, but then went after the weekends saying that they couldn't enjoy their homes any time the track was open. It all seemed to fall on deaf ears until someone had the idea to make it into a park, and the politicians embraced that as a win-win for themselves and the homeowners, with no concern for the racers.

Basically the same thing happened to Lions although it was a rather short track by today's standards.

Last summer, a couple guys were complaining about how far out of town are new dragstrip in Pierre, SD. is.....A couple of the senior citizens of local drag racing jumped all over them, relating how many dragstrips around the country had been shutdown because of some local politician wanting to sell the property to a developer!!!!! In the mid 80's we lost are 1/8 mile drag strip right on the west side of Sioux Falls because of silly feud between the track operators and the fairgrounds board.... It was the place to hang out on Saturday night!!!! Since it closed all the locals have gone back to hunting down a remote chunk of blacktop to run on..and of course a bit of stoplight action downtown. When the city complains about street racing, there always seems to be a group show up at the City Council meeting with a proposal to re-open the 1/8 mile track at the fairgrounds and it's always shot down....

Where in the heck do these municipalities get the idea that because they shut down the dragstrip, people are going to quit racing????

If Lions had been longer, it would have been harder to find the cars in the shut off area fog bank-at least if they didn't get stopped, Santa Catalina was only 26 miles across the sea!!!!!!!!!!

I was there the night Arfons almost run off the end in Cyclops. He was supposed to make 3 passes and the 1st one was the only one, besides the fact the he burned most of the little flags down and threw the starting line barriers under the tower that bordered the spectator and pit areas.

Flint, Michigan, is where the main Chevrolet Manufacturing complex once stood. It’s now just a huge brownfield, as all the buildings were demolished several years ago. The Mayor of Flint, who was a certified idiot, proposed building a drag strip there to shore up the economy of the area. This site is less than 1/4 mile from downtown Flint, in the middle of a residential area. Needless to say, his idea was shot down by just about everyone in the county! Even the racers knew this was a bad idea! His wife owns the largest GM dealership in the WORLD, as the commercials attest, so I’m thinking politics had something to do with it. He got voted out in the next election.

Milan is about 60 miles south of Flint. I’ve never been there but I have friends who race there regularly.

We hauled out to Pierre SD a couple of seasons ago to run with NHRDA and got rained out after we arrived.

I ran there a couple years ago and these poor lanes needed some major work. There was talk then of the track getting shut down and various reasons why. Hopefully someone like the guy who owns a few tracks in Iowa will buy it and keep it going.
