I used #1 battery cable and it sags. But I don't look at it very much. I am going to fiddle with them this winter. I don't care for the way the lugs turned out. It is possible I will run them in some kind of tube.
After I got it all wired up the folks at Haywire said I could have gotten by with a #2.
My upholster said he cold hide a #2 but not a #1 under the door jam. If you are willing to cut the boxing plates you can run the cables inside. But pulling them is a trick.
I have a tilt wheel and it stays full down all the time. I considered a straight column but when I mocked up I did not like the angle and it would have required a longer column drop. The doors on my roadster have a 2" stretch and that makes entry much easier. But if I had regular sized doors the option of tilting up would be quite desireable.
Bottom line, I think I would do a mockup and see what works best for you.
