Question 350 SB new carb/intake/hei squeeks at carb

I recently bought a new Mallory HEI distributor, Eldelbrock Peformer intake and 600 cfm performer electric choke carb... the old motor had the stock points ignition and divorced choke..put the motor at TDC and dropped it all in but it wont fire/make spark and also there is a horriblly annoying squeek commin from the carb just when u try to start it maybe from the choke? need some help on trying to get this thing running again.
wondering if maybe the ground in the cap isnt grounding for the HEI?? HELP! ...it would be nice to drive on my birthday.

    motor is in a 72 2wd 1/2 ton suburban SB 350 TH 400

Are you sure the squeek is coming from the carb and not the alternator? The reason I ask is since you stuck a new dizzy, coil and wiring harness in it, something maybe drawing more current than the alternator is able to provide. If this is the case, when the extra load is on the alternator it makes it harder for the shaft to turn and can cause your belt squeel. I don't know if that is what is going on here it's just a suggestion.

As for the other part, when you set the #1 to TDC, how did you do it? ie. pull #1 spark plug, stick your thumb/finger in the hole and turn the motor over until the built up air pressure pushed your finger out of the hole? If so, where ever the rotor is pointing when that happens is the #1. Verify that you have it set to the correct firing order, 18436572 unless you have a cam that is set up to allow you to run an alternate firing order. While this is probably highly unlikely, it is possible.

    Good Luck,

    TDC?

Were you at TDC on 1 when you pulled the distribtor or are you on 6? did you make sure #1 was at the top and the cap was pointed to #1 wire? If you only used the timing mark to find TDC you may have been TDC on #6 not #1. If you aren't sure pull the distibutor and make sure you are at TDC #1 by either pulling the valve cover and making sure both valves are closed on one and both at open on #6 or by pointing the timing mark to TDC and make sure the distributor is pointed to the #1 cylinder. Sorry if you know all of this but this is the first thing you need to check. Next I would check that you have spark at the Coil and then at a plug. If you don't you need to continue troubleshooting the New ignition. Good luck. As far as the squeek...get a mouse trap.

    no more sqeek just backfiring

hey i found out what the sqeak was it was the enigine grounds not grounded, so the choke wasnt wokring right ( this took care of the sqeak) and the ground IN the cap also was not grounding properly so i fixed all that and when i set the motor to TDC i pulled the #1 plug stuck my finger in and had a freind bump it over till it pushed my finger out and the line on the balancer read 2 from tdc so i figured that its TDC right? ok so then my distributor i noticed that if i turn the bottom gear untill it makes a clicking sound then it drops right in place bolted it snug put the wires and cap on and the plug then i go to fire it and it has spark now becuase its backfiring really nicley could it be 180 degrees off still? do i have the wrong #1 on teh cap? HEI's r kinda hard to figure out for me cuz no rotor to point to #1 for me, can i drop the old distributor in again after TDC to see where the rotor points and then make my HEI #1 plug where that rotor was pointing is this affective any imideate response will be appreciated wheile its raining so i can get back out there! thanks for all help

It's GPS. The coil sends a signal to the satellite and back to the cap. no dizzy. Sometimes stalls in tunnels & under power lines tho.

Dizzy on an hei is a 360 degree (round) rotor. Line #1 up with the metal contact on the rotor.

OK ha ha forget all the rotor and blah blah blah i got the motor to fire today just had to move the plugs around on the cap moved em all left seemed to be the trick and turned the distributor a little bit n it just kinda jumped back to life again. runs alot better than i expected it to ecept when you have everything go right for a minute somthing is bound to go wrong so hey hey i drove it around a bit and i got me a nice leak at where... about right at the rear main...my guess is there is no easy way of going about fixing this, well probably, thats what you guys are for, so see what kinda help you can do for me on this one. ha thanks

I wonder if he used one of those "other" brands, could he make the truck jump rope, play at the beach, and generally have a great time?
