    oil pan gasket replacement

I have a 84 tbi engine and i was wondering if I can replace the OIL PAN gaskets with the motor in the car. The leak isnt bad, it looks like the wind is pushing a little thin line of oil the length of my pan --(from front to rear)

I know for sure there is enough clearance

So my question is......(if I buy the 4 peice gasket set)

how do i get the front and rear gasket to stay in place?

Permetex should keep the pans (side gaskets) in place.

Do i just stick the U shape gaskets on the pan and push it up?

Or do I stick the front gasket in the timing chaincover and push the pan up?

    Im confused

can some body give me simple instructions on how to change the oil pan gasket ****not the one peice seal****

Get some permatex weatherstrip adhesive and us it to glue the end gaskets to the rear main cap and timing chain cover. Buy the way, the yellow seems to work better than the black (?). Then put the pan up WITH NO GASKET and install the two bolts at each end to hold the end gaskets in place. Twenty minutes (or so) later, take down the pan and put the side gaskets on with gasket cement and install.

That's how I do it and it works.

    Good luck!

Are you sure its the gasket ? Maybe the bolts need to be tightened or could be a leaky bolt or striped that needs to be sealed. BTDT

I have the 1/4" x 20 all thread I cut to 4" and put one on each side. Use them as a guide when I raise the oil pan to the block. Helps with alignment. I also have two others waiting with nuts on them. The longer bolt helps as an extension to start the bolt in the hole. The nut then keeps the pan in place so I can get the oil pan bolts in place. Small tip helps me so well I keep them around for future projects.

The one piece gaskets do work good. I used one on an engine two years ago and have not had an issue yet.

And they come with four plastic alignment fixtures to hold the pan in place while you start all of the other bolts. Those plastic holders are almost worth the price of the gasket, IMO.

use to do oil pans in boats over head. pull engine out on chain fall and use 4 pc gaskets sets we use something that was called type M made by OMC was far better then yellow . 3m and yellow is better then black but both are not what they use to be .i think they took some things out its not really yellow death any more. but the M bad stuff and made by 3m take all the bolts out it will will not come off less you have a rubber hammer or a stick of TnT. if you buy felpro one pc pan gasket they come with helpers the hold the pan up. some guy love the one pc pan gaskets i realy do not care that much for them much had one leak on a bbc never seen any thing like it. oil would leak out one of pans bolt hole ? but some carb cleaner and RTV fix it but for what your doing you may want to try one

well it could be front seal but they go bad as the damper get a groove cut in it from the seal so a speedy sleeve very well be needed along with a new seal.if you crank case is not vented the engine will find a way to vent

    ok well tell me this..

the damn pan is leaking when the car isnt running! There is a thin line of oil running the lenght of the pan. ( dead in the middle)

You can wipe it dry, and after acouple of days it will be back.

what does it sound like too you?

Oil never really touches the ground, (its just a thin line, running the length of the pan)

ITS doing all this without the engine even running?

    Whats going on?????????????????????????????

    help

i know its coming from the front. BUT the motor isnt even running!

you could put a pc. of cardboard behind the damper touching the damper to see if it is the seal. put somthing by the front pan gasket to see if that is it??? you just have to play its game. I wouldn't change anything till I knew what it was wasted time and money.
