My next dumb question. Check list?

Is there a website or pdf file I can download a "check list" of needed parts for a long block.

    Reason for asking:
I'm getting my block back from the machine shop tomarrow(.030 with new everything and ready to build) and I was trying to make a list of the parts I needed but I'm a little rusty and the my DA brain just dont remember all the stuff from 15 years ago. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

None that I know of, but it isn't all that hard to figure out. What you will have is:

    1) Rotating assembly..........crank, rods, pistons, rings, main and conn rod bearings.

    2) Valvetrain assembly.......cam, cam retainer, timing chain set, lifters, pushrods,

    3) Heads. Heads, rockers, adjusting nuts.

    4) Gasket set, with rear and front seals.

    5) Head bolts, timing cover bolts, pan bolts, intake bolts. (If you have gone to all the trouble of having your block machined, I suggest new ARP bolts for everything.)

    6) Misc hardware like key for crank, bolts for timing sprocket, etc. Comp Cams makes a neat kit for about $ 20 that includes all these little pieces everyone always loses. I bought one for the 350 in my 23 and it was a life saver.

    7) Oil pump, pickup, driveshaft, and bolts. Again, while you are in there I suggest an aftermarket driveshaft like an ARP or similar.

There are probably some parts I've forgotten, but these are the major components.

    Don

OH, and get some good assembly lube and cam lube while you are at it. Also some break in lube.

I always like it when the wife says....

Just buy the parts or tools.

The main thing is to not get into a hurry. Take your time and plenty of break in lube.
It doesn't take long to put together when you have all the parts. Try not to start till you have all of the right parts. Then do alot of research on the web.
I did this when I put my 455 together without a glitch. I've only done a few motors, but what a joy when it's done right. Recheck everything before you go to the next step.

And if you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

I'll add a few things to Don's list:

Plasticguage (I ALWAYS check the rod and main clearance, even a machinest has bad days and parts do get mispackaged)

Feeler guage to check ring end gap

    Ring compressor

thread sealer (if the engine has headbolts that go into the water jacket)

    harmonic balancer installer

    good torque wrench

manual of your choice showing bearing clearances, ring gap, torque specs and firing order.

    Paint of your choice

Don't forget to check and make sure the oil gally plugs and cam plug have been installed.
I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

my 2 cents. band-aids, rags, hand degreaser, magnetic rod to pick up droppped parts. also extra sockets. might seem like a stupid list but will save you from pulling your hair out.

You can get the bore done first if you want. The thing about it is when you order your pistons for the size of the bore, you have to check each piston itself to make sure that all the pistons are the same size as you would have to check to make sure the bore is all the same size. When they make pistons, they could have one or even two of them off. You would have to send back the one or ones that are off. This is very cridical. When I received my pistons from (KB), one was out of size.

Not everyone is perfect. Take your time.
