The distributor is probably installed 180 degrees out.
You could probably just lift it up enough to rotate the distributor shaft 180 degrees and then drop it back down to get the engine to start.
Best way to check for TDC on the firing stroke is to pull the plugs. Place your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole. Rotate the engine slowly until the pressure forces your thumb off the hole. Continue rotating the engine slowly (will not be much additional rotation at this point) until the timing marks line up. This will have the #1 cylinder at TDC on the firing stroke. Now install the distributor so that the rotor is facing where the #1 spark plug terminal is located. Re-install the plugs and the engine should fire up. Check the timing and adjust as necessary.
