Timing Issue. Any Help?
I have a 383 Stroker engine, 557, Aluminum heads. Aluminum roller rockers. Had a HEI, Went with a ProBillet Dist. New coil, wires,Mallory 6AL box, All new. Pulled The dist. took off valve cover rotated engine till #1 Cyl Both vales are closed. #1 Cyl. is at TDC. Drop the Dist. in , Its pointing at #1 Cyl. Cranks and it will hit but not run? Could this be The degree on the cam??? Ive TRIPLE checked everything. Please Help.......Last edited by kens383stroker; 02-18-2010 at 05:19 PM. Reason: misprint

You want both valves CLOSED, and timming mark on tdc

The distributor is probably installed 180 degrees out.
You could probably just lift it up enough to rotate the distributor shaft 180 degrees and then drop it back down to get the engine to start.
Best way to check for TDC on the firing stroke is to pull the plugs. Place your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole. Rotate the engine slowly until the pressure forces your thumb off the hole. Continue rotating the engine slowly (will not be much additional rotation at this point) until the timing marks line up. This will have the #1 cylinder at TDC on the firing stroke. Now install the distributor so that the rotor is facing where the #1 spark plug terminal is located. Re-install the plugs and the engine should fire up. Check the timing and adjust as necessary.

The 383 is in a 87 Cutlass. Thanks for the help guys. Its running Great.. Anybody know of a good 750 carb to run on this engine?? 383 eagle rotating assembly, aluminum heads with roller rockers, 557 cam (not sure of duration)

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
