well !!! maybe 12.500 rpm then .. he raced at huntsville dragway when he was`nt running the national event tour .. it was neat to see him dial that thing in and run bracket races with the 4 speed .. usually give the person he was running a half track lead then run them down ..

I think parts of the story have been changed over the years.
    I just love "bench-racing".

and here I was thinkin the story was .......the guy chased the small block down on foot ,givin the car a half track head start.....geeez

I wonder how the story will be when our grandkids tell it ...... they put opposite rotating small blocks together and rode down the track on the flywheels........
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

id rather help him build the 327 then talk him into getting something else, hell its his car not ours i can help but im not going to tell him to not do it. livens things up at the racetrask instead of it all being 302 fords and 383 chevys that gets old fast,

The car is ganna come in at around 2700 pounds and i would like to at least pull a high 11. We wil rarely street the car mostly strip car. So what do i have to do to accomplish this. Will i reach my goal with a build like this?
O.K,if this is mostly a strip car then lets take the comp. ratio up and over 13 to 1.
I would run a set of 210 cc AFR heads.
If this is a true drag car then I would run a set of shaft mount Jessel,or T&D rocker arms.
I would run a mech. roller cam with no more than 270 @.050.
Also at these rpm's I would think about using the 4 & 7 swap firing order.
A Super Victor would be great and a flowed 750 dp.
If this is an auto. tranny you will need a 5,000 stall and a trans. brake.
With this combo. it should pull to 8,300 rpm's depending on where it is installed.
If you want more rpm's than 8,500 then you really need to look at alu. rods.

You know,,,,,Eric gives good advice here with this combo.
These motors are now considered history and most don't/won't build them.
But I would love to see a write-up/article from some modern/current low cubic inch but high horsepower drag race engine builder (modern Bill Jenkins) do a build-up to make one of these competitive in the stock/superstock classes now!
Modern technology, advances in engine design and racing,,,,,,,Scooter buddy,,,,I bet we'd not recognize it when a '2008' Bill Jenkins,Smokey Yunick or some of the other greats got done with a 283 or 327 cubic inch motor!
And I'll add this, the market has slowed or ended for this as far as it being practical for modern 'guru's',,,,but I am just dreaming,,,,as if it had continued as it has with 'rice' and all the other modern balongna.Guess they want it to die,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

i have a bunch of old hotrod and carcraft magazines from 1960 - 2008 and its a trip reading the ones from the 60's and early 70's but alot of guys used 283's or 302's 327's in their cars with the 55 56 57 chevs and 302, 327 camaro's and more.

This guy says he wants to build a 327 so why not? I plan to i have a 350 4blt main block and a tired chev 307 that i'm going to steal the crank from to make a 327 4 bolt main.
    yeah thats right I'm going to turn a 350 into a 327.

if i had a 327 small journal block i'd slap a 283 crank in it to make a 302 also. there has to be forged cranks out there still from that era. if not there is always aftermarket light forged steel or aluminum 5.7 conecting rods and light forged pistons and balancing at the machine shop

I have one I am building with spare parts. Mine is a L/J 350 2 bolt block . With a 1971 307 3.25 Crank . and a set of 11.1 pistons with SPS rod bolts . The heads are full ported #882 76cc 1.94/1.50 . This engine should have 9.5.1 CR . And the Cam I will use is the . Comp Cams CS 275DEH It's 219/229 Dur with 462/482 lift and has a 110 lobe sep . For the intake I picked up a used Edelbrock Torker I . For a carb a re-worked 600 V/S Holley . I am thinking it will make some power like this . COOL
