    chevy crank casting number

I have this chev crank, the casting number is 3882442. The second 8 could be a 3 (3832442). What i am trying to find out is the balancing of this crank. Anyone have any ideas?

305 & 350 crank. The balancing is different because of the lighter rotating assembly in the 305. Balance it for your application and you'll be happy

depends on who was supplying parts. Yes I know it's a chevy I was informing you that it was used in both 305 and 350 apps. They are balanced differently from those two more than general balancing differences such as a 350 to a 350 or a 305 to a 305.

Nuetral balanced as far as flywheel and balancer. No counter weights are on any of the flexplate/flywheel and balancer peices. So, you need to go for the application in the vehichle you are putting in. The timing tab location will help determine which balancer you need because of size and location. Later models changed the timing mark for easier acces for the timing light method. Flexplates where different in diameter for offset starters and stuff. That required knowledge of what you were putting inas to tooth count and diameter. As far as external balancing of those components, None. they are nuetrually balanced. By the way, what in th eworld are you doing? It would be helpful to have some info so your assembly will go smoother.

I ended up with this engine. It not to lond ago was rebuilt. It hasnt been put together. When i got the engine i got as a long block. no covers, pan, balancer, no cam, push tubes, rockers etc. So now im trying to see what parts that im going to need to finish it. It is going to go into an 84 trans am. It has a 305 in it.with a 5 speed.
So you are saying that the balancer is nuetral, flywheel is nuetral to. So this should interchange between the two engines? Timming cover should work to, with the balancer off the 305?

Yes. Remember to use the same timing cover. No sweat, you'll be just fine. Did they balance it for better perormance or just a regular rebuild?

other than flat top pistons, they rebuilt the heads, did a little porting and polishing, nothing fancy.

If they did some balancing there should be markings on the crank rods, removing material?

As long as the crank came with that motor, you should be okay. I only say that because the 305 used the same crank and it will knock the bearings right out of it. So, I hope the assembly came out together and will now go back together to make you life easier.

Yeah, balancing is easy to spot. Look underneath the pistons for light drill marks. The rods will have some belt sander grinding on the ends and the material removal will be slightly different. If it looks like a factory set up, it hasn't been precision balanced. It should be fine though.
