it the same as checking the bearings with plastergauge, it dont have to be done, but you need to stop telling everybody how good a motor you build, because for what people are paying for them they're not getting their moneys worth.

Mike,you really need to go back and read my other posts or have some one explain these things to you.Yes,I am able to tell how close the valve is to the piston.I run it until it touches the piston and subtract my gross valve lift from that number.That shows my clearance.Funny thing is this has worked for 15 or more years for me.I had two engines in modifieds that finished in the top ten in 2005 at the I.M.C.A. Supernatinals.There where over 500 cars there.Gee,I don't know.Two in the top ten.Not bad for a mid-western farm boy who does'nt know anything.I still would like some one to try and explain this to Mike.What we have here is a total lack of communication.What really is funny is you are the only one that is up-set about what I charge any I have never sold you anything.L.O.L. :LOL: :whacked:

Guys this ain't brain surgery.

Both methods will work, although I too am unaware of plastigage that thick (> 20 mil). As you all know plastigage is typically used to check bearing clearances, not larger gaps. Modeling clay etc would work just fine too. Maybe even penut butter in a real pinch.

Me too, I usually like to stay at about .100 on valve to piston clearance, figure it gives me about a .020 safety cusion. I use the light springs and dial indicator method to check clearance, that along with one eye on the degree wheel, no need to double check with clay....I wasn't aware they made plasti-gage in .060 to .100 thickness ranges, never seen it at much more then .006 or so. Don't know for sure, been years since I've used it.

Erik if these guys agreed you were right they would never say so. For whatever reason they don't like you, or me either I suppose, and I would imagine they will do their best to torpedo every post you put on here.

As I said on the last pi**ing contest, how about we just forget the personality and ego crap and just share information that makes us all better hot rodders........

well maybe we can.not get along ? erick you may build a better engine then me ? but i have built stuff that you may have put in the dumpster and they are still running . eveyone has there way to do stuff i have tryed to get along with all of you. BUT there is one thing i do not like. making fun of any ones spelling. my spelling is very bad. all may posts need to be eddied and so it takes me time to post i do not think any one should make fun of some one problem. all this is free info for someone let them make up there mind how they want to do it. denny wanted to know how to find true center to fly cut that is easy. take a junk valve cut the head off cut a point on it put your head with no valves in it. on run the piston up TDC drop the old valve that now a punch thur the gulde and tap it this is were true center is:whacked:

If you and Mike don't like Erik, what in the heck difference does it make? Does it justify attacking everything he sez??? And of course now I'm the A**hole, Erik has a smart mouth, and no one should ever have a difference of opinion with someone just because they're older??? That's BS and you know it.... Now just drop it, ok????? When it comes to taking sides, always show me on the side of building a better Hot Rod.......
