    If you put it on backwards the starter won't work. The center hole has a raised lip on one side, that goes out away from the crank. On some aftermarket ring gears, the lip is awful small and hard to see, look close. You want the gear close to the block. The gear teeth also should be chamfered on the front side, where the Bendix gear comes in from.
