If its in your 82 camaro, the noise from the gear drive might cause problems with the knock sensors, then sensors pick up the noise and think the engine is pinging therefore it retards your timing which if this is happening all the time will make your car run like #^%$^$.
if that was the case i belive he could unhook the knok sensor and drive it and see if it ran better. wouldnt hurt anything and might prove something.
