Hey all still having trouble with the Dang Car. was just wondering How accurate a gear Drive Is with the Timing!!!! someone was telling me they could be off! cuz i cant get it to run right and i adjusted all the Rocker arms correct and it still dont work!!!!! let me know what ya guys think!
I have a gear drive in my 55 chevy, alot of people do not like them for various reasons. But I don't think they are any less accurate timeing wise if installed correctly.Carlg
Did your problems begin after changing timing set ups? If so I'd recheck to make sure the cam is installed properly. I don't like the gear drives because of the noise mostly. I'm afraid it might hide another problem that you can't hear. I've never had a problem with a good quality double roller timing chain set-up.
What kind of problem are you having with the car?
If you block has had the crank holes line bored they usually end up cutting the new hole higher in the block making the crank closer to the cam . Race engine builders measure the centrline spacing and check the min and max for the gear drive you are using. If your red line is 7 k a good double roller works just fine.
I installed a edelbrock geardrive in my 56 chevy. When installing I realized there were several markings on the gear. A square a triangle and a circle. They were for 5degrees adv or tdc or 5 deg ret. I almost installed the cover when I noticed I was on the square instead of the circle. You might want to check that if all else fails. Good luck DH
They arent any more or less accurate than a chain setup. I would look for other problems if you're positive you installed the gears correctly.
If its in your 82 camaro, the noise from the gear drive might cause problems with the knock sensors, the sensors pick up the noise and think the engine is pinging therefore it retards your timing which if this is happening all the time will make your car run like #^%$^$.
if that was the case i belive he could unhook the knok sensor and drive it and see if it ran better. wouldnt hurt anything and might prove something. :HMMM:Quote:
