    epoxy on cast

hey everyone, has anyone ever used epoxy on heads or blocks with any luck?? The reason is ,i've got a really good set of 461 double humps that are fully ported, 202-160 stainless, 1.55 double springs, and one of the spring pockets(when it was machined for bigger springs) has hit water. Now it was epoxyed and spring cup was put in place and spring installed and it looked fine( i bought them this way at a real good price) I speed brushed the epoxy out and cleaned the head very good, even brushed the hole with lauquer thinner, i've built many hot small chevys in my time but never had to repair any cast parts. So has anyone had any luck with epoxy in a manner like this, because i'd hate to send the head off to get welded, that can get costly and even then i'd have to grind the pocket out to fit my cup! may be i could braze it, but will the brazing expand the same as the cast??? any help would be great.

I know adhesives have come a long way in the past few years, but I would be hesitant to use epoxy.
There will be heating and cooling of 2 dissimilar materials.
    coupled with water pressure.
Oil and antifreeze attacking the epoxy.
Valve spring wearing on the epoxy repair.

Might be the reason they sold 'em cheap???

i will agree with proZ, there is only one right way to fix these heads and that is a head shop. can you imagine what a pan full of antifreeze will do to your brgs if that thing leaks and you dont know it, or worse if you valve spring breaks through the weak head

Decisions decisions. If u want to keep the cost down and u can weld then heat the head in an oven and weld it while its hot. Now the rod u will need will depend on how much u know about welding and what kind of welder u use. A good weld shop should be willing to get u up to speed on the basics. I would not use any epoxy or braze myself, whatever thats worth .

    Got one name.

JB Weld "World's Finest Cold Weld" made right here in Sulphur Springs. They claim they have repaired cracked cylinder walls and rebored in Cat engines.

    Regular JB Weld specs

    "Properties (psi)
    Tensile Strength: 3960
    Adhesion: 1800
    Flex Strength: 7320
    Tensile Lap Shear: 1040
    Shrinkage: 0.0%
    Resistant to: 500° F

Mechanics -- you can use J-B WELD with confidence. It is designed for safe, reliable, permanent repairs in engine compartments and heated environments up to 500° F. It's strong as steel and impervious to water, gasoline, chemicals, and acids. Working with J-B WELD is quick, easy, and convenient -- and saves you time, work, and money!

Not recommended for use on manifolds, exhaust systems, and other engine components which normally operate at temperatures above 500° F. "
The above is quoted from JB Weld website.

Surely you are not operating over 500 degrees there.

    .

no, i'm sorry, i'm not laughing at you, i'm laughing at JB's claims and at all the attempts of JB fixing i've seen in the past. i should point out i am in the ag industry and you should see the stuff that farmers will try to do with JB weld and bailing wire. sorry if i offended you , i didn't mean it that way

    bad news

Well well, yesterday i took the heads to my machinist and had them maged, and guess what, they are junk, four cracks in one and the other has three. I have always bought new heads and rods, pistons, cranks because of this very reason, i was just tring to save money on a low buget build and it turned and bit me in the ass, Word to the wise, never buy used part that you can't hold in your hand and really check them out good!!
