It is easier to remove the cover AFTER removing the front two or three front pan bolts on each side. Remove the timing cover. As you pry it forward from the top. You will see where the lower seal retainer, side strips, bind on the lower block surface. After removal. Clean this area. Then trim (cut off) the upper area of the lower seal retainer on the front cover. At about a 45 degree angle.
When you replace the cover. Use a good amount of silicone sealer on the rubber seal and around the modified area. after install start all your cover bolts. Then tighten the front pan bolts. Go back and tighten the cover bolts.
Works every time..
