Thank you. That Hemi is a serious budget build, too. I found it on the Local Craigs list. For 400 dollars. Went to look at it and it was a total rustball. But the guy was adamant that had "his grandbabies" not pulled off the plug wires and cap and stuffed the distributor and carburetor full of dirt, it would run. He even made sure I saw that it turned by hand.
SO I said "what the hell and took a chance. After all, how many times can you buy an early Hemi for 400? SO I got it home and tore it down. It was one of the cleanest engines on the inside I had ever seen! He was right! I fully believe it was a running engine. Anyway, I measured the bore. Found out it's a .030 over 331. The numbers verify it. It is also a "severe service" truck engine, which means it is a thick wall casting, meant to be bored many times. I COULD have bored it to a low deck 392, but that's not what I was after.
So I called the guy back just to let him know how happy I was and I just happened to mention that it's a 331, not a 354. He would have it no other way but to send me back 100 dollars, so my purchase price was not 400, but 300 dollars.
Oh and that intake? It's a pretty rare piece. It came off a Fire truck. Originally it was a dual one barrel intake, and man, those were some BIG one barrels. Almost 2 1/4" diameter barrels. SO I ended up using some trans dapt one to two barrel adapters, and putting two 2GC GM two barrels on it. I sent the stock hydraulic cam out to Oregon Cam Grinders and had them grind it to a small street solid. .453 lift and 240 @ .050 duration on a 106 lobe separation. It will at least sound nasty with zoomies. lol Maybe I should start a thread on the whole truck?
"....... Maybe I should start a thread on the whole truck?......"
Yup :D
.
My brother sent me a craigslist link to a 50s dodge truck with a 331 or maybe even a 354 hemi in it. If I had the extra money laying around I'd pick it up just because. They sure are neat!
You could start a new thread in this area:

Thank you for the link! I will certainly start a build thread. It may take a day of four, because most of the pictures are on my other netbook, which is dead, but my computer man says he can transfer everything on this one. But in the meantime, I can take some more now so you can see the direction I am going. I am off Thursday and Friday so I will get the pictures then and post.
Thank yall for the warm welcome so far. This is a little different and refreshing compared to some forums out there.
Sorry I have not updated this yet. I am waiting on a crankshaft socket that can also hold a degree wheel. These engines are not like Chrysler engines. Their crankshaft bolt is not very substantial. The head on the Chrysler is 1 1/4" and has a thread size of 3/4 and can easily turn the engine. After the camshaft is degreed, the short block will be buttoned up with timing cover and oil pan. I'll post a couple more pictures tonight of where I am when I get home from work. I have the oil pan and timing cover stud kits installed. I also need to get on the rat rod build thread, too. I am waiting on parts there. They included the wrong flywheel bolts with the transmission adapter kit, so I am waiting on the correct bolts. Hopefully, they will be here tomorrow (Thursday).
Aight den. Here it is with the studs installed and the camshaft and that hundred dollar plus Comp billet timing set installed. Lipstick on a pig? Maybe not that harsh, I reckon. I just like stable timing and I don't want to hear a gear drive. Coming along ok, I think.
Got my new crankshaft socket today. Degree wheel fits nice. Will be degreeing the camshaft soon.
New toys???
Ya know, it's been said that without pictures - it didn't happen!! LOL..
One of my favorite quotes. lol Well, I will get pictures of the new tool this afternoon when I get home from work. But, unfortunately, my dial indicator's magnetic base will not let me get the dial indicator parallel with the lifter travel. So, I have to wait again. I am going to order one of those lifter bore tools that inserts into the lifter bore and holds the dial indicator directly in the lifter bore. So for now, this project is at a stop.
However, all is not lost. I CAN bolt the flywheel and transmission adapter on the Hemi. But then I have to wait till payday next week to get the clutch set, THEN I can bolt the bellhousing and transmission onto the Hemi. I know, I know. Pics or it didn't happen. lol Look for a rat rod truck build thread in the next few days......but dammit man, I gotta sleep sometime. LOL
8-)
Sleep is over-rated!
