yep done many what year head ..no heat cold the EX has to go out thru the valve cover side if you push them down and out from chamber side you will screw the head up intake any way they have no set way the EX are wet so i put some 620 loc tie on the head just port side not valve cover side .look at the vlave guides there is some times shift on them if the they are way off center new guides put in you very well could have to go up to a bigger valve to get them to seat up .that why i core drill them to 500 and drive a liner in them

781's from the mid seventies, so i should push them both out towards the valve cover side. I was looking at pistons and there are 2 srp pn's for 496 one used stock rods and the other uses 6.385 rods. what are the pros and cons of the different rod lengths in a 496.

i built them both ways if you have a good set of stock 3/8 thumb rods with arp or sps bolts to mild hp and rpms or a set of the 7/16 dimp rods i built them with with 6.135 rods but the 6.385 rods help to get more counter weigth in the engine to go internal balance.and not more money to up grade to the H beams less you can re con the stock rods your self . you want the guilds comming out the valve cover side .you will be hitting them with the driver chamber side /deck of head watch you do not slip and hit the deck they some times just do not come out .they rust in.. that is why i line them with a 502 liner and i can go to 11/32 valve stems
