dizzy not reaching oil pump shaft,.

hi,
great site , hope you can help!
juat rebuilt my 71 454 standard height big block, i bought it in bits.
new oil pump, shaft and dizzy, tried to prime the pump and i get a whirring/ clicking noise from the sump area?
also the flat blade on the dizzy does,nt seem to reach in to the slot on the pump shaft, ive also tried 2 other dizzies!!. the bottom of the slot on the shaft is approx 198 mm from the manifold top , where the dizzy sits. the blade on the dizzy is about 185mm from the same place! whats gone wrong??? hope somone can help, mike..

i know a guy that did that .i whip up a wee small oil pump shaft with a steel collar so he could race it at the track that day. it did work after that he put a bbc shaft in the engine:HMMM: well he said he did

part number and reciept say its a heavy duty bbc oil pump drive shaft, not tall block??? could it packaged wrong, what are the lengths of the sbc and bbc pump shaft?

the tall deck is the same oil pump drive as a 9.800 bbc the tall deck needs a longer dist or the intake needs to be cut for the stock dist if you not down ?some thing is to short do you have a tall deck block 10.200 or a 9.800 block? like i said if you have a tall deck you need .400 more on the dist if a slip collar dist move the collar i cut dist down on the lathe and make them slip collars

just measured it , 9.8 , pump shaft and pump are correct but it is about .4 short! ??? is it easier to make a longer shaft or alter the dizzy,? what about the clicking when i primed the pump ? ....... mike.

then it would fit the oil pump shaft is not right any way you go you have to be in the cam gear or you will just trash it i built many short deck 9.800 and 10.200 from 396 to 638 i have never had a problem with the oil pump shaft you have the wrong one or you have a tall deck you need to check the over all of the shaft or your dist or intake someone has screwed with it in some way

All stock chev dist are same length--sb, bb, and tall deck all have same length

do you have a spacer between the main cap and oil pump to lower the pump for a deep sump pan?

Tall deck truck manifolds had the dist setting lower----A few companies now make dist with sliding collars, but if your shaft doesn't mate with your distributor in the area of the boss you are asking for an big oil leak all over the track/road and a trailer /tow truck ride home

no jerry the old tall deck truck did have a longer dist i can not tell you if the new hei is longer but the older points ones were. yes if it has the oil pump with a bottom pickup them it will need a longer oil pump drive

there is no spacer between the cap and pump, dizzy gear is meshing fine with the camshaft, the oil pump shaft measures 170mm, could it be the shaft or the pump is a reject and not quite the right dimensions, or perhaps a different make would be slightly longer, 5 or 6 mm on both would solve the problem, i would be unlucky to have both of rubbish quality!!!, mike.

I just measured a new ARP # 135-7901 bb chevy oil pump shaft kit---it measures right at 6 1/2 inches

^^^ 6 1/2" amounts to 165.1mm.... 170mm is 6.69 inches (or about 6 11/16").

if my shaft measures slightly more than an arp shaft i,m fighting a losing battle!! i,m gonna have to machine a longer one,!!
perhaps i,l stick to the small block and put the blower on that!!, i got twin predators on the blower, (never used), wot they like?? mike.

I didn't include the sleeve in my measure ---it would probably be at 6 11/16 if I had done that.
Dave-----I'm old enough and raced enough stuff that it doesn't matter what brand they call em---most engines don't use any stock oem parts anyway

take a photo of the back of the block were the dizzy sits and snap a shot of your dizzy. drop a tape in and give me the measurement from the oil pump slot to the intake flat were the dizzy sits and i will have number for you. i have some blocks i get measurements off at the shop and are you sure you do not have a tall deck?????

just tried another pump , same as the last one ,melling 77, and it seems to be about 5 or 6 mm longer in the shaft, just measured from the shaft slot to the dizzy base on my other motor, a small block and that only seems to engage bout 5 mm, so....... it looks like the first pump i tried was a reject! i suppose 5 mm is enough for the shaft to engage? the small blocks been run like that for bout 2 years !
