Until the T-stat opens you have aeration due to heating of the coolant. This allows a "bypass" to keep circulation of the coolant until proper temps are met. There are theories of other benefits for this purpose and I only subscribe to a few of those. It is just a great idea to keep it functional for street running. The Moroso (and others) pump is and was primarily designed and intended for drag racing and such where the whole attitude is different.
