The intake manifold is an extension of the cylinder heads.
If you have a smaller intake runner and then you do an intake gasket match to meet the heads in other words you made the exit of the intake runner larger you just lost all your port velocity.
Always try and match your components.
For an example. If the cam pulls to 7,000K then you heads,intake and carb need to do the same thing.
