    Door Panel Pockets

Anyone know how to form a semi-solid or solid pocket on a door panel to hold things like maps, etc? I can visualize how to make a soft map pocket with an elastic top band, but wonder about making them more rigid?

roger if it is any help to you my monte has the semi solid pockets. what they did is attach carpet to the bottom then put a pleather edge at the top with just enough gap to put things in it.

    A few choices.
The ones in the door are typical upholstery backer board, but could be done with ABS sheet, or luan plywood (like door skins). Behind the flap you could put the elastic pocket thing you envision if it's somewhat shallow, or you could make a compartment from the panel board material, or mold one from fibergalss. Carve a male mold from foam for that.

Also some pics of larger storage in the trunk side areas, again, formed from panel board.

    Bob,
I really like the use of space in the trunk area. and your door panel picture has me thinking about a hinged box flip-out for a needed secure storage - mine would hinge at the bottom vs yours at the top. Do your latches lock?

Barb, I think I understand what you mean. Can you snap a picture of the door pocket for me? Any stiffener on the carpet, or just the way it is mounted forms the gap?

These are a fairly common upholstery item. The spade portion that mounts to the panel rotates, it fits through a hole in the portion mounted to the flap. It's a quarter turn to latch, then can be turned either back or forth another quarter turn to allow the flap to clear, then repeat to latch, no lock. If you wanted something that locks you may have to go to something that resembles a suitcase or attache' latch.

Why not a shelf under the dash?
A lot easier and always accesible, even when drivin

    Don,
I like the idea/approach but I have a subpanel running beneath the dash to catch my VA controls, light/wiper switches, signal LED indicators, etc plus my battery is mounted in the middle against the firewall. I don't have that real estate to work with this time....

Roger, if your looking for a locking latch you might pirate one from a mid 60's Chevy pickup glove box. The one in my 62 locked through the push button if my memory is right. All of the early GM, Chrysler, and Ford locks are pretty easy to re-key.
