    Driveshaft Length - How Long?

     



    Here's the deal...I got a 90 Wrangler that has been lifted and converted from a 4 cyl to a V8 using a 700R4 and an S10 transfer case. The front driveshaft is missing.

    How do i figure the proper lenght for a new one? When I look this up in a Jeep catalog, they list 2 lengths - one for the 4cyl and one for the 6.

    Well...this being a V8 conversion with a 3" suspension lift levase me stumped!

    I can easily measure the at rest lenght U-joint center to center, and jack it up to let the suspension extend and measure that. Not sure how to compress the suspension to measure that?

    There shouldn't be too much difference in length with suspension travel. If there is you my have trouble keeping it together. If you raised the suspension 3" you should adjust engine/trans so it lines up with the pinion and also the pinion angle lines up with the engine/trans. Then put a yoke in the tans. allowing a little room for sliding in & out (so the yoke doesn't bottom out against the trans.) then measure tans. yoke to pinion yoke.

    Ask A drive shaft shop they deal with differant shofts every day. They know what shaft your gonna have to use. I would beef it up a little so you don't break it, like so many other guys do . In other words have them make it a little thicker or a bigger diameter. Measure from yoke to yoke, tell them what lift you have and that it's for a front axle and transfer case. what kind of truck,what axle and what transfer case,so the u-joints will fit right. It would probably be best to take the truck right to them. So they could do it them selves. That way if it's wrong they can foot the bill, to make it right .

    Slide the yoke into the transfer case until it bottoms out, then pull it back out 3/4" to 1". Now measure between the yokes and that's the length you tell 'em to make the shaft.
