I have an 88 Silverado, 5.7 with a 700r4...OD does not work....is the tranny worth rebuilding or is there another way to get the OD work

Bill,
Amarillo is a nice sized city and should have some good resources. I'd stop by a few of the local independent mechanic's shops and ask them who they use for tranny repairs, because they don't do tranny work themselves. Nine times out of ten there'll be one local shop that all the shops use, often even the dealerships. That's the way it is here, a little hole in the wall tranny shop that's been around for years. Go to that shop, let him do a checkup on your tranny, and go from there. Stay away from the "names" that spend their money on advertising.Roger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

What he said. Might need an adjutment.
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Can you start off in OD, or do you need to go into 3rd to get it rolling? It's electronic, so it may be an electrical issue rather than the tranny itself?
I know that the brake pedal has a switch, that kicks it out of OD, when the brake is applied, so could it be stuck on perhaps? I would also look at the shift linkage, just in case it is out of alignment, and not slipping it all the way into the OD position on the tranny.
I had a 700R4 completely fail, (90 K2500 4x4), and the apparently issue was that I had been driving in OD while hauling around a camper, and sometimes a boat trailer as well. Packing, or towing a load of any decent size, and you drive the 700R4 in 3rd only!
First signs of failure was losing OD, and 3rd, at the same time. I had just coasted down a long hill, and when I leveled out, I stepped on the gas, and the engine just revved. Dropped into third, same thing.. It would start off in first as usuaI, and would shift into second, but then nothing..
I had to limp it home 300 miles in 2nd gear, which was not fun..(I also still had reverse).
Hope it's something simple for you..
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
