    B&M hammer shifter

Anyone have experience with the hammer?

In my 69 nomad w 700R4 I just switched a B&M star shifter for a hammer. I hate it, it is very tight. Kind of lives up to its name, as I pretty much have to slam it to make it shift.

If I remove the detent spring, it should loosen up, but will it cause problems missing shift points?

Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

I took a look at the pdf for that shifter @ the B&M site, it looks like the same mechanism as the Mega shifter, which is the one I use. My guess is that the stiffness you feel may be due to the newness that being said I would think driving it will loosen it up some. I assume you have the cable installed without any tight angles or curves. You could disengage the cable from the shifter end and see how it feels, that would tell you if the stiffness is the shifter or in the cable. I wouldn't modify it myself for the very reason you say.

B&M makes a great product, last a long time, works real well, easy to get along with.
