Geezer,
'83's had both T-5 and SROD 5 speeds, and they have different bellhousings so you'll need to get a 5.0 T-5 bellhousing with your tranny from the V-6. This is a paragraph from a discussion on upgrading a V-8 into a Fox Body Mustang:Bellhousing: This depends on the transmission your are using but the 4 basic ones are the standard transmission bellhousing for a T5, standard transmission for the SROD or Toploader 4-speed, the auto bellhousing for a C4, and the auto bellhousing for the AOD. Other combos are different still such as the Tremec. The best way is to get the bellhousing with the tranny if possible.
thanks a lot for the info.i have the 5.0 bell housing .it had a t-5 in it.i hope this t-5 will fit my bell housing.its free and i just got burned on a t-5 i bought used.it lasted 8 miles. hahaha, buyer be ware!
yeah,my old buddy rodder calls em t-5 minute.im not hard on our cars so if its any good i can pet it a long.i get all i can out of em. dang i hope this tranny fits. im thinkin it mite just bolt up.
never had a moments grief from mine .. cant imagine anyone being harder on one than me ..
Love mine also, but I'm easier on my cars than I once was ;) .
Ratios are different in the V-6 cars. first is pretty low for a V-8. you may not like it behind a V-8 car unless it's just a daily grocery getter.

yes the early T-5 should physically bolt in, but since it's the early version from a V-6 car it won't be what they call the "world class" T-5 and won't like having even a mild amount of power put through it. My memory is kinda fuzzy on it (I blame Jack Daniels for that) but I want to say that the world class T-5 didn't show up until somewhere around '89 or '90.
88 for WC. but not all brands/models got them until later.
Might want to ck here for the best information:

thanks guys.im not goin after it for a couple weeks.that gives me plenty time to research these trannys.i dont mind a low first gear.its not a hot rod anyway.me wife wont let me add any power to it . she likes it like it is.the little car only has 47k on it.the old poot that had it gave it to his grandson who got drunk and ran it through a fence.my buddy picked it up and the old man said just keep it.hes not gettin it out for the kid so my buddy gave it to my wife.the price was rite!!!!
i also have one of them old 4 speeds.the one that 4th gear is overdrive.it will work but its not a top loader.id have to cut a hole for the shifter too.then the dang console wont work out.i think i'll try the 5 speed first.
whats wrong with the one you have?
it needs a rebuild.its bad!!hahaha.i took it to a shop and the guy told me it would cost me 1100 so i started lookin for another way!
so does it have any stripped gears???what were the symons??
yeah,it has stripped gears. it locked up too.
I paid $175 for an 88 Firebird V-8 trans (WC) at a wreaking yard. works perfect. heck you can't open yours up and inspect it for that.
Russ
hahaha,im not that dang lucky.the t-5's ive found are way high.well, anything is high to me but ive seen em for 7=9 hundred.
If I remember correctly, the Camaro and Firebird T-5's were not installed straight up like a normal transmission. They were rotated 15 degrees, so you have to make sure you're getting a T-5 that will have the shifter coming out in the correct place and angle.
i got the tranny from the 96 v-6.the only difference is the input shaft. the one in the v-6 tranny is 3/4" longer.i will be lookin into changin the input shaft and stick that sucker in!!!thanks for all the help folks.i preciate it a lot!!!
good deal on your tranny buy. the 6cyl. t-5 is the same ratio as v8 t-5 , and you can change the input shaft easy enough. i just pulled a t-5 outta an 87 turbo tbird that first gear is way too deep for me 3:95, compared to the 3:35 in my 5.0 now. while your changing the trans why not go ahead and get a new cable/quadrent/adjuster? i did mine and it was a breeze. as always just my 2 cents, nickyb.
