Looks like the one is a C4(might be a C6) and the other cast iron one is a Cruisamatic. Could be wrong as I can't see the pan shape. As for using another transmission, does your block take 5 or 6 bolts to hold the bellhousing on? Early ones were 5 later were 6, and the 5's are hard to find bellhousings for. If it is a 6, any good later bellhousing will bolt up.

Then you are screwed. Well, not actually screwed, but bellhousings are very hard to find and costly. If it is truly 5 bolts, the top bolt will be centered on the block instead of two bolts up top, parallel. Is that what you have?

Here is a link I found and some pictures of transmissions to avoid. Your second one looks like what they call the C3 or Cruisamatic.

My knowledge of these 5 bolt blocks is limited, so one of our more knowledgable guys may have better news for you.

I've got to run out for a while, but here, this diagram should help you ID them:

1965 was the year the bellhousing was changed to 6 bolt and the trans bolt pattern changed along with it,I have seen T-10s and toploaders with both bolt patterns.

So that means I'll have to look for pre 1965 in both of the trannys?
And is it only fords/mercury or is there others ?
