Thanks guys for giving me some other things to look at. As soon as the weather clears I will take it out and do as suggested. In the mean time I will go ahead and drop the pan. At least it will get a fluid change. If nothing found will change u-joints. maybe by then the weather will be clear again.

Well I think I figured it out. I have about 1/2" of play in the rearend. Meaning I can turn the pinion shaft about 1/2" in either direction without turning the wheels. I suspect that is the noise I am hearing. So I guess it is time for a rearend rebuild. I was so fixated on the U-joints that I didn't notice the rearend slop. Now to find someone that can do the rebuild without a bend over. Guess I will also get rid of the 2.73 while I am in there.

Not sure about your area, but around here the local 4x4 shops are the place to go for rear gear work. They're into them all the time, know the ropes with the different units and often are cheaper than the other guys. Might be worth a few calls, or if you have a local Jeep/Offroad Club ask them who the good local guys are. They'll fix you up with a locker, tooRoger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.
I saw last night on fb about John. The world sure lost a great one. I'm going to miss his humor, advice, and perspective from another portion of the world. Rest in Peace Johnboy.
