Is the tranny doing this under a hard thrashing or normal take off.In car checks, oil level/oil-pressure/modulater and lines/pump regulater and boost valve/valve body-leaks/frontservo and accumulater.Ok now you say your running a 3400RPM stall converter behind a 396BBL what kind of converter is it,brand name/ new/used ETC.If every thing that I mentioned a long with every one else checks out ok I would start looking at the converter,If it's A 10inch Vega it won't last behind a BBL.So if you no the history of the converter if all above checks out let us no.yes a shift kit is A good thing in a properly working trany in good shape.
