400turd
how about some feedback on a tranny that slips going in to second and slips alittle more, but goes alright on the freeway;also it shifts fine manually.fluid is up.but im going to change it today;is their a filter to change as well?any help will be surely appreciated.o yeah ive got 396w/cam roller/rockers headers,msd,34oo stall w/oshift kit.....would shift kit help?thanx.

I am no trans. expert but I would go with a fluid and filter change.
-
how many quarts in a 400 turbo?
-
i dont think a fluid change is a good idea if shes slipping.... new fluid will finish off a tired a transmission.... sounds to me like you need at minimum a band adjustment..... but you should make sure the tranny fluid is strained and reused....... you might be on the edge of dropping a clutchpack
-
i think there is more needed than fluid, a th400 holds around 12 quarts if the converter is drained, 5 or 6 if just the pan is dropped, that is also where you will find the filter. and correct, new fluid in anything over 70,000 miles will probably work all the dirt deposits loose in the case, and catastropic failure is possible.
-
Sorry, no band adjust ment on a THM400. If you pull the pan, it will tell the whole story. If it looks like a science project, time for a tear down and rebuild. You still may have a pressure problem which it's going to take a person with good detailed experience to find out why. If you're fortunate, the main pump spring is weak and can solve the problem. I doubt it though. Accumulation of material usually causes lip seal bypass not allowing pressures do apply the clutches. If the shifts have been deteriorating over the past while, build it, it's time.

Denny has a possible "Look-see" there. Check the center bolt for filter drop. If it fell out, pump is sucking air. Remember thm400 uses an electric solenoid for kick down. Again, as he said, fluid burnt? smells burned? Get ready to tear down.
-
Oops is acceptable Denny. Look at someof my posts where I oops. Knowing what I was trying to say and yet the simple thing I was trying to put across was a silly "oops"...........we love ya man!

Is the tranny doing this under a hard thrashing or normal take off.In car checks, oil level/oil-pressure/modulater and lines/pump regulater and boost valve/valve body-leaks/frontservo and accumulater.Ok now you say your running a 3400RPM stall converter behind a 396BBL what kind of converter is it,brand name/ new/used ETC.If every thing that I mentioned a long with every one else checks out ok I would start looking at the converter,If it's A 10inch Vega it won't last behind a BBL.So if you no the history of the converter if all above checks out let us no.yes a shift kit is A good thing in a properly working trany in good shape.

where is the accumulater located?is that the thing that the wire from the kickdown switch plugs into?
-
Didn't mean to leave you hanging here. The main accumulator is inside the unit. It's necessary to tear a lot of the components down to see how it travels and works such as valve body etc. They do get "gunked" up with debris. This is another indication of clutch wear causing a lot of grief. Remember the accumulator's main purpose to "soften" the shift so as not to "bang the gears" when it does. Every aspect of tear down will show you how worn or how bad this unit has become. Science projects were only fun in junior high school not our rides. Keep us informed. oh, and the servo pistons will also become "gunked" up with material and I recommend a great book or somebody to help see what's what while you do this. Still sounds like it's time to tear down.

What Is The Thing That You Plug The Wire From The Kick Down Switch Into?
-
The reason it doesn't slip when you shift manually is you are also applying the and clutch band It only applies in manual 2nd. You need an overhaul If you service the trans you remove evedence of failed parts that sometimes are not that obvious. If the fluid smells burnt the clutches are burnt,
