    Anyone ever use a Getrag NV tranny?

     



    I see some of these GM truck 5 speed manual trannies for sale and am wondering if anyone has ever used one? If so, how did you like it? Pros? Cons? Refering to the Getrag NV 3500 or 4500...

    I dont know much about them but what do you plan on using it in? If its for a car, id say no and try to find a t5 from a camaro or s10 if you want a 5 speed.

    But if your gonna put it in a truck or towrig id say go for it. Theyre pretty beefy and can handle the power of a built cummins in dodge rams. And theyre pretty bid and heavy.

    I am looking for an overdrive tranny for my 60 belair. I have a 454, so T5 won't hold up. I really can't afford a TKO or T56, I got about $700-$800 to spend and these trannies are priced similarly(sp?)

    The NV3500 is used behind the 4.3L V6 and light duty V8 applications. In my opinion, even the mildest big block in a full size car would cause it to become shrapnel. The NV4500 is stronger, but the ratios are all wrong for car use. See

    How about these New Process MY6 4 Speed Overdrive Transmission trannies? Used in mid 80s chevy trucks? Same gear ratios as a 700R4. Stumbled on to them recently...

    Anyone ever use one of those?

    I've never used one, but they might be a good alternative. The big difference between the MY6 and GM "car" transmissions is that the MY6 has a truck sized 5.125" IBR vs. the 4.680 IBR used on cars. You'll need a "heavy duty" bellhousing from a truck. Here's a couple of good sites:

    Luckily, my 454 came from a wrecker, I grabbed the bellhousing!!! 12" clutch, no need to change the flywheel. Stars, planets and moons have aligned...possibly? thx again (btw, dumb question: what does IBR stand for? internal bearing retainer???)

    All of the MY6 trans that I have seen use 1/2 ford and 1/2 chevy mounting pattern. You would have to have the bellhousing that the chevy truck with MY6 came from.

    I have a NV-4500 in my Doge with Cummins diesel. It's great for pulling your racer to the track but it takes longer to shift than some cars take to get down the track. Smooth as glass for a truck transmission. 5th gear is a bit weak for heavily loaded diesels but no problem for gassers.
    Not a car transmission. 400 pounds I think.

    Cummins turbo diesel . front license plate, black smoke on demand, Muffler KIA by friendly fire (O&A Torch co) fuel pump relocated, large fuel lines. silencer ring installed in glove box, Smarty
