    Smile tranny update

I posted the other day about my 71 Chevy that wouldn't shift into third - I have fixed the problem, it was the modulator valve.

next problem. when removing the old modulator i snapped the bolt off .upon using an easy out i snapped that off into the hole i drilled for the easy out. now the modulator is being held in by a small set of c-clamp vise grips .any help would be kindly appreciated on how to remove the broken bolt withou snapping off the mounting "ear" thanks

Umm, do you know how to sharpen drill bits? Buy the most expensive one you can get and drill+sharpen until you can insert another EZ-Out. This time, try to use some heat and penetrating oil before using the EZ-Out. The trouble with the ez is that it is a smaller diameter than the bolt that broke in the first place. Therefore, if the bolt was so stuck you broke the head off trying to loosen it, you're just going to break the EZ-Out as well. You have to use something in conjunction with the EZ like heat and penetrating oil, or both. Try Aerokroil or PB Blaster for best results. I will warn you in advance, it's going to be extremely difficult to keep the drill bit tracking straight through the EZ-Out, it is going to try to wander into the safter material of the bolt. Start with a drill bit of significantly smaller diameter than the EZ to make a pilot hole. Then, step up to one of the same diameter. If you feel like you're going to break the EZ on the 2nd tri, STOP. Drill the whole bolt out and use a thread repair insert such as a Helicoil. The Helicoil kit will specify the drill size you must use.
